Need help with avatar

Ok, so I thought I was a reasonably intelligent human - maybe I was wrong. I am trying to create an avatar using a simple .jpg file. I opened it in Photoshop CS4 and reduced to image to 125 pixels on the longest side. I then saved it at the lowest quality (smallest file size). The file is still 19kb in size. The RFF requirement is a file no larger than 10kb. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to make the file any smaller.

I would appreciate any advice - go ahead - make me feel like a goober...

You are not alone. I managed to get my avatar pic down to the required size but it's really crappy looking. I see others that are sharper and crisper so I think I'm missing something as well...

In Photoshop, you need to use the "save for web and devices" feature.

16bit image maybe or using save as instead of save for web
