I've got a combination 35mm/120 Paterson tank plastic reel which is currently stuck in the 35mm position. I know there is a way to expand the reel to take 120 film, but I've forgotten (if I ever knew) how to do this. What's the trick?

Thank you to all who reply.

With best regards,

Turn the side part as like as you spool in and then further - can be quite stiff... then it is ready to pull apart.

Just twist the reel clockwise so that the two parts come apart, then put them together again in the expanded position.

If I remember correctly: Grab the reel with both hands and hold it in front of you, rotate your right hand (you'll hear a click), drag the reel open, extend the reel to the 120 position, rotate the right hand side of the reel back again, push inwards (new click).

Pfreedie,

I agree with what has been said. Only comment I would add is that loading medium format film with plastic reels is considerably more difficult than loading 35mm film. Film is not as stiff, so must be loaded more carefully. 120 is not too bad, but I have always had trouble getting all of the 220 roll loaded, particularly in a changing bag.

Good luck!

Separating those things is a royal pain in the ass for me. I always end up splitting the two parts, and then have a helluva time putting them back together again! Glad you've found it relatively easy.
