Need Information on three Cameras

What opinion have we imposed on Nashirak?
He came into a forum that is full of people who are passionate about photography and the tools to do it. What should he expect?

That he'll *only* get a cut and dry answer on how to sell his grandfather's cameras?

Of course there'll be some of us who will express what we would do in his situation. He's free to ignore them.

This isn't about needing money, it's just about getting it done. They've been sitting in my house for two years now.

I'm not planning on repairs, they shouldn't need any. Since they were last CLA'd (that includes the vulcanite on the work order) they've been kept inside a house in sealed cases.

We'll see what happens at the shop today.

I actually do have all the documentation where they were last sent off to Leica, who referred him to a place in Canada, and the workorders from both.

None of the opinions have hurt my feelings or anything. It didn't surprise me. I expected some of that reaction.

$275/300 on the IIIF
and the LeicaFlex $200/225

sitemistic - do you have any pictures of your dad with that tractor? Looks like when my dad goes one of us kids is going to get a boat none of us has any use for. He sure loved that boat and I have very fond memories of some great ocean fishing expeditions. No pictures though, and I regret it deeply.

nashirak - split everything up before you sell it. Some potential buyers will ask you to anyway. I bid on an eBay sale for an M6 with 35mm & 75mm Summiluxes and some other Leica stuff -all 9+ condition. Potential bidders were emailing the seller minute by minute begging him to break up the gear but he wouldn't. I threw down a sympathy bid and - surprise! - won. I sold the 75mm Summilux (already had one) and the other stuff and netted the M6 & 35mm Summilux ASPH for $1,500 - about the going price for the body alone from KEH at the time.

The object lesson is: break your gear up. I know you probably just want to get this over with, but it is a shame to leave money on the table when you really don't have to. And BTW, the prices Tom suggests are reasonable for the bodies IMO. Plus $250 for the M-Summarit, $200 for the collapsible Summicron on the IIIf (unless the front glass is completely free of cleaning marks), and maybe $75 for the Summicron on the Leicaflex. You probably want to sell the Leicaflex/Summicron/hood somewhere other than RFF. Best of luck and enjoy the holidays!

There's those plus 3-4 more lenses and some other hardware. I intend to break it all up, post up ads for them. Like I said earlier, this isn't any emergency that needs to happen ASAP. I'm just getting a feel for the market.

All three bodies are at shop for the weekend, getting a once-over and some film run through them. I'll have the bodies and pictures on Monday to post up. After that, you'll see some classifieds pop up for them.

It's a finder probably for use on the IIIc but can be used for other lenses. It should have a group of 5 or so letters on whih will indentify which finder it is.

When parting out, you ought to know that each and every Leica item can be sold individually, the filters, the lens hoods, the front and back lens caps, the view finders, adapters, even the boxes the cameras came in, the camera bag -- in fact, any item that says Leica, Nikon, Canon, etc., should be sold individually to get the most in resale...

As Kim says, this is an external viewfinder that fits on the accessory shoe of either the LTM or M3 body. It looks very much like the Walz finder I was playing w/ recently (borrowed from a friend), in which the size of the "view" can be adjusted for different focal length lenses (useful for cameras w/out switchable framelines or internal viewfinders). There is a still a market for these items, what w/ continued interest in older LTM cameras, Bessa Ts, and the like.

Leitz/Leica Univer. finder code name VIOOH..........if it has white serial numbers on the other side of the black lyle part it`s 1950`s, if it doesn`t then it`s 1940`s, (hard to tell if this has gloss paint of semi gloss paint, that also dates it as well) ........also need to know what numbers are stamped on the chrome ring around the top as for lens settings 50mm 73mm 85mm 90mm etc. etc.............. it was more than likely 100% with the Leica IIIF that your Grandfather had, it`s a nice and helpful little item, if it`s clean and clear inside and works, it`s worth $65 to $85

Yeah, but I'm not interested in trying to maximize my profit to that extreme. When I sell a lens, I'm probably including the lens covers and the cases. One of the longer lenses actually has a felt-lined leather case it came in. Trying to break it all down that far is just too much for me.

Thanks for the answer on the viewfinder. It has a white serial number 33683.

Just a few random thoughts from my brain. YMMV.

Your grandfather had excellent taste in cameras.

My will states that my photographic equipment is to go to my grandchildren. I hope I have instilled in them a sense of pride in ownership. I trust they will use the equipment, or, at the very least, keep the equipment in the family.

Did you ever give a nanosecond of thought to learning how to use this equipment? It ain't that hard.

You're basically asking the opinions of people who are not traders, they are users who want to figure in the cost of service, etc, or they tell you to use them when you're clearly not interested. They don't have a whole lot of real world experience wheeling and dealing daily.

My take is that you have excellent to minty condition stuff which is highly desirable.

If you sell on eBay (assuming you list correctly and have some good feedback already. You obviously know how to take good photos of the stuff), I think you'll get closer to $3000.

I would not sell here with fixed price until you do CAREFUL eBay research and see how real world prices ended up for things similar to yours.

Don't worry about deducting for CLA's and so forth, that's the buyer's job.

First two cameras will fetch a good price, certainly more if CLA'd. I got $650 for a IIIf red dial, no self-timer with a 35 MM lens, but it had been CLA'd by DAG. As for the Leicaflex, they make excellent paper weights and door stops.
