if you are not an experienced repairman, learning camera repair with a repair manual often ends up with a disassembled basket case camera which costs more to reassemble the than the original repair. I learned that from sad experience years ago. Never again.

Perhaps I should be a little bit more clear on what I'm trying to do. Basically I just acquired an S3-2000 and the helicoid gives a slight squeaking sound. After looking at old threads about this normal problem, I think I should be able to clean the helicoid by myself. But as Brian Sweeney said, he wouldn't do it without the repair manual. Hence here I am looking for one. Actually what I need is just for that particular section on disassembling the helicoid.

This is not something difficult :

- step 1 : removing the front plate 4 screws
- step 2 : lifting the front plate off
- step 3 : removing the helical 3 screws and marking them (two identical, one different)
- step 4 : lifting the helical and the infinity lock arm altogether off
- step 5 : marking the spacers that were under the helical
- step 6 : removing the infinity lock tab 2 screws and removing the tab
- step 7 : unscrewing the male part off the female part of the helical, and taking notice of where the engaging point is
- steps above 7 : read what I've written this morning in the other thread, and reassemble in the reverse order.

Total time should be roughly 45 minutes. Only hardware needed is : an ultrafine steelwool ball, some dishwashing soap, and hairdryer, an old toothbrush, some good lithium grease, and some good small screwdrivers.

Highway 61's suggestion to buy a good set of screwdrivers is important. Once the pain of paying for them is over - they last a lifetime. The squeeling focus helicoil of the Nikon's does indeed go away after a while - in most cases. However, if you are doing the "lube" job - get some premium Lithium grease and apply sparingly and work it in. I have done a couple of S3's (chrome S3 Millennium and S2 Bd). My Olympic S3 has a slight noise and will need it soon enough.
As for instruction manual blunt statements - my favorite was the opening page of the manual for my 1949 Bentley " The owner shall instruct his driver as follows" and the follow-up sentence "In case of mechanical problems - return vehicle to Crewe, England".
Well, it did cost me Pounds 300 in 1971 - and I kept it for 3 years and never had to return it to Crewe - as as for informing the driver, no problem as I was the only one who drove it. You just had to press the "oiling" pedal every 100 miles (small "flag" on the dash popped up.

Cherry on the cake : as you will remove the S3 2000 front plate, this is a very good opportunity to install a blue filter under the main viewfinder window to dramatically improve the rangefinder patch contrast, like Jonmanjiro explained in that other thread (click).

This is indeed a very good suggestion. Do you know where I can find the blue filter ? I searched the net and ebay for the one that Jon used. Except one store in Japan, I can't find any that sell it.

Unfortunately I also don't have the luxury to go to a local camera store and try every sheet filters that they have.

Hi all,

I am looking for any direction as to where I might find/purchase/download service manual for Nikon RF. I have been tinkering and doing minor repair and CLA as far as I can comfortably with the sources I have found on webpages and here. Have been working with S2 and S more often and do have a few basket cases that I would like to practice on. Have been doing Nikon and Nikomat SLR's for a few years, and have been able to source those repair manuals.

New to the forum, and hope I can contribute from time to time with some of my repair and/or troubleshooting experiences. I'm also an amateur photographer and do try and use all the film cameras I have. As far as Nikon RF, presently shoot M, S, S2, and S3 2000 and hoping to add an SP and S4 sometime. Recently got into flash bulbs with Nikon BC-4 and BC-5 and found these to be great units, with working or replaced capacitor.

All the best and thanx in advance for any help/direction you have to offer.
