My Sp works perfectly, but I made the stupid mistake of trying to clean the viewfinder window myself, and I accidentally broke the glass, and when I tried to repai it, I dented all around the viewfinder window, is there any way I can have that entire upper right area replaced along with windows, and the dents reshaped, or is it done for?? Please e mail me suggestions

Wow KIU, want to reword that? You probably didn't mean it, but your reply sounds a little harsh
Allanana - hang around. There are many people here who successfully do their own repairs. Sounds really like you need to pick up junker that has the parts you need. Or, hope someone here in the forums may have something.
Somebody is sure to help.

But is it worth it to send it to a specialized repair place, have them take apart the camera, re fine the dents, and try and find the glass and optics to replace the view and rangefinder mirrors? I took it to a repair place here in Dallas and they said, ohh that camera is worth nothing, look how old it is, they didnt even know what a rangefinder was.

Well at least they didn't offer to take it off your hands cheap.

I like to think there is a stage in everyone's life that they feel the need to be a butcher.
This is my FIRST camera, a hand-me-down!
I lost the screw that kept the wind lever in and finally lost the wind lever.
Then I tried to open her up because I felt the NEED!
Turns out it hard to open them up without breaking them.

I destroyed only one window and on one side only, the far right window from the back side, everything else is not broken, only the front and back glass, and some of the metal that was in there, the dents I can send to japan and there is a guy who reshapes dents and re paints, by the way this is an SP professional, worth about 8 k I was told.

One more thing, even if the view finder window is destroyed, I could just sned it to this guy in Japan, that would repair the dents, repaint the camera and put glass on the window, than just use a rangefinder add on insetad of the built in mechanisim, right?? Please don't reply with rude comments, if you dont have anything nice to say, than dont say it. here is a picture, once I get it on my PC

I was about to write that an SP isn't worth $8,000 unless it's black and in near perfect condtion, and that the P in SP stands for professional. Then I saw the April Fool's Day comment ... arghh. Next time I'll just stay offline all day.

tried emailing via NHS - from my yahoo - maybe it was blocked - maybe just didn;t want to reply!
Fred, I;ve got an SP missing its frame selector dial - i read in a thread a while back that you had some spares - possibly including one of these dials. Would you part for $? or can you suggest where I can find this?
cheers and thanks Carl
ps
mine also has a broken -badly replaced front viewfinder glass - thinks it's been cut from a microscope slide!

April fools jokes aside, I seem to recall once being told that the rectangular viewfinder window glass in a Nikon FG was a perfect fit for the viewfinder window in one of the Nikon rangefinders (the S3 I believe). The person who told me is very knowledgeable and deals in vintage Nikon gear. I won't mention his name unless someone else can confirm this, as this conversation took place a couple of years ago, and I don't want to attribute comments to him unless they can be confirmed.

We're all too trusting here.
I didn't respond earlier because I just couldn't imagine a scenerio where cleaning the glass destroys the front plate.
