Need some help rewinding film...

I didn't know as much as I thought I did when I took out me Zorki MIR for a photo shoot last week. I *thought* I followed the correct procedure to rewind the film, but the rewind knob only tore the film out of the spool: the film advance knob hadn't been released.

I moved the little lever beside the rewind knob, but it didn't do anything. I could use some help on the correct procedure to unlock the film advance knob when I want to rewind the film...:bang:

I don't know about the Mir but I almost made the same mistake with my Zorki 6. I thought that the lever near the rewind knob was the release but it was diopter adjustment. On the 6 there is a small unlabeled button near the film advance that is the release.

On the MIR it is the collar around the shutter release button that you use to disengage the winding gear. Turn it clockwise as far as it will go-about half a turn.

It did do something - it altered the VF dioptre! 😱

As fanshaw says, you need to turn the collar around the shutter button to release the film advance.
