Needing some of those Positive Vibes... ;)

Where to begin?

As those of you who've been around here awhile may remember, I was a stay at home dad for a couple of years back when I first joined this delightful web site. More recently, for a bit more than the last year & a half, I've been driving a big truck to help bring in income. Being on the road constantly has not been easy for either wife (Oy!!!) or son and the situation has finally come to a head - I'll be quiting the driving gig effective July 11 and being a full time dad again. Talk about the proverbial pluses & minuses... :bang:

I've decided that, in my "copious amounts of free time" (when I am not cleaning the house, doing dishes or laundry), I'll make a serious stand at being a fine arts photographer. Given my tastes & abilities, this will probably be "yet another" rural &/or urban landscape kind of thing though my hope is to find the kind of shots that will work well as framed 4x5 contact prints - emphasis on a jewel like quality, for example.

Well, thanks to anyone who made it this far.

William

May I sincerely wish you a succesful transition and I hope it works out for you.

Cheers ... Keith. :)

Good luck!

Can you explain more on this? I'm not sure I understand...

"framed 4x5 contact prints - emphasis on a jewel like quality, for example"

Why not be a fine art photographer?, looks like a win win situation. Good luck.

William,
Might not be easy but it is worth doing. Years ago when I visited Madison, it seemed like there was a strong arts community there. If that's still so, you should have at least a few people who will appreciate your work.
Good luck!
Rob

William - good luck and my best wishes for this new endeavour. This is a great opportunity for you.

william, you are a good guy.I hope you will succeed:)
One thing i can suggest is, try more things than that rural/urban landscape thing. Portraiture,e.g., might bring interesting results in 4x5, and might evenbring money with some patience and investment in convincing people to sit for you.
The equipment you have, as far as i know, available :)

By jewel like quality - let me guess:you meant not large wallsized landscape prints, but more like a small but very perfect version, like a jewel, like a 4x5 contact print :)

William, remember too, that attitude is everything. If you see this situation as a positive (saving a marriage, spending time with your child, opportunity for photography) it will be much better than saying to yourself: "Here I am stuck at home."

I drive a truck & can feel a bit what it's like for you. I do admire you for what you are doing. Family comes first. Good light with your photography, & hope you make a good living out of it.

Thanks all. I do look at this as a positive and intend to finally get a dark room set up & to do something photographic daily. And it's always a joy to bee with my son daily.

My best wishes for you. I tried it for a bit and found it created some self esteem issues within me. I had a home based business during the period but ran into the self esteem issues early. Dropping the kids off at school and watching the other parents rush off to work, etc left me a bit envious. I needed the give and take, the B.S. you get in a communal office setting. Just my mishagos. I ended up clinically depressed not because of this interlude but it did contribute. So... my advice is to stay active and make this new direction an endeavor worthy of your time. Do it right - do it 100% and you will be successful and happy. Don't due it half assed like I tried.

I could not take being away from family for long times. I'm lucky enough to have flexibility in my hours and work schedule.

You'll enjoy staying at home with your Son. Good luck with your 4x5 prints; would be nice to make a go of it.

I'm single and on the road 90% of the time, so I know it can be a grind. Good luck with your photography, I hope it works out well for you.

Good luck, William. Enjoy your life to its fullest, and what you are about to do is another stage in your exploring life. There should be no regrets. Post about the experience.

William,
I don´t know you but your decision commands my respect! Get at it and do it with conviction!
Good luck and as the Italians say "Forza!"

I was wondering how to say something like that. FrankS has said it better than I could think of. Family staying together trumps everything.

Ditto what FrankS said. I've enjoyed your posts over the years, and your attitude to photography. You're one of the folks who makes this site a good place and online community. Good luck with your fine art photography, and as a fellow dad I envy you the time you will share with your son. Perhaps you'll find a photographic project closer to home! Happy Father's Day!
