Needing some of those Positive Vibes... ;)

There are probably a few key elements to make this a success.

1- Photographs that speak for themselves.
2- Direct sales - you need to set up an internet site
3- Publicity - you need to direct people to look at your photos
4- A good choice of format and presentation will likely help, I'd not get fossilized with contact sheet printing, in fact good inkjet output might even be better

Traut, what you went through is not uncommon. I hope you are OK now.
One should never be apologetic at staying home to run their own business. Owning a business is orders of magnatude more difficult than just working for someone else. Your whole life is in it. I grew up on the farm, and later had my own photography business, and it takes all your time and effort. You don't walk away from it at 5:00, or really ever take a vacation. Those that don't respect the independent business man are just ignorant of what is involved.

wlewisiii, I wish you the best. Treat it as your business, not a pasttime/hobby. As best you can, keep regular hours working at it, making contacts, planning, promoting, and of course, photographing. You are fortunate to have a wife that will support you in this.

It isn't easy being a stay at home dad but it can be very rewarding. Apart from the fact that you will be closer to your kids than most dads are, if you're well organised, you will have the time and space to make a go of what you want to do. I've been a stay at home dad since I left the regular army and, since then, have managed to write (and photograph and illustrate)14 published books, a large number of newspaper and magazine articles and make a few TV documentaries (OK, I didn't actually do those at home but much of the preliminary work was done there) whilst bringing up two boys and a girl. I've also served as a reserve officer in the British Army which has kept me from getting isolated and sent me to various interesting places.

Good luck! My advice is to look at it as a positive step: you know what you want to do and you have an opportunity to try to make your living from something you enjoy.
