Neg sleeves - paper or plastic?

I'm using plastic Print File Archival Preservers and I love them.

Thanks for the thread. I've been struggling (and swearing at) the PrintFile polypropelene sleeves lately. They're a constant source of sodding scratches; lovely lengthwise runs along the negs. There are no other sources of scratches like these in my workflow (I don't wipe negs to dry). Perhaps a folding sleeve for individual negative strips is the answer. Then, the negs are not pushed into and pulled out of sleeves - the source of the scratches, I believe. Where can I buy such sleeves?

I cannot understand these complaints about polypropelene scratching negatives!?

I have been using Print File for over a decade now and have yet to experience scratching due to their use. Have been using poly in general for over 15 years and glassine ( also spelt glacene) before that.

I am by trade a photographic archivist and I am always extremely careful about what I use and how I use it - never had a problem with polypropelene sleeves at all and I have an archive of over 15,000 35mm, 120 and 4x5 negatives, all b/w, as well as over 20,000 'happy snaps' all stored in poly pages. Even my colour tranny work ( less than 2,000 images ) is stored in poly slide pages.

Same here. The only way PrintFile is going to scratch is if you introduce dust at the time you sleeve the negs (the original time or later). I've been using them even longer than you -- around 20 years -- and I've had no problems either. I have to order another pack of 100 35mm tomorrow, and I like 'em so much I did a mini-review of them:

Something I should add to this is that if you have difficulty sliding the negs into the 35mm sleeves, cut a tiny corner at 45 degrees in the neg rebate. Without the sharp corner, they'll slide in easier.

I agree with you - trimming the four corners of each strip of negatives makes it much easier to insert.
I discovererd this little trick way back in the early '70s when I used to use the neg file wallets. Not sure what they were made of back then.
