Negative Banding

Would be interested in opinions on what could have caused the dark banding across what appears to be every sixth negative, as well as several others, in a recently developed roll of Ilford HP5 Plus; see two attached pics. Film was developed along with another roll in a two reel stainless steel tank using Hewes reels. Neither roll was mis-wound - no kinks, etc., and there are no issues on the second roll. Camera was an Olympus 35 RC which was recently CLA'd. At first, I thought it was a camera malfunction, but now I'm not so sure. Perhaps there was a malfunction in the film manufacturing process?

Dennis, there's a sticky on the forum about how to post pictures in threads. I share from Flickr (still free for hosting <1,000 images), using the BBcode method in Post #8. There are also some methods that don't require Flickr or another external hosting site:

As an aside, I've also had some intermittent dark(er) banding issues on some of my negatives. Much more intermittent and not every sixth frame like yours, but I've not been able to pin down the cause either. I won't hijack your thread, but I'm following along to see if some suggestions from members might help.

Unfortunately, this link doesn't work for me. Again, a very frustrating, clumsy website. Not worth my time to pursue further. Have contacted the individual who CLA'd the camera, an Olympus 35 RC; easily pasted the pics in an e-mail. The bands go across the entire width of the film including top and bottom sprocket holes. Visible on every 6th frame as well as several others. Suspected a camera malfunction, but thinking that it could be a film manufacturing issue?

I agree the forum is a bit clunky, but if you can get over the challenges, there are a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people on the forum. Hope you get the banding issues sorted out.

Put the film back in the camera as it was shot (upside down, reversed). Have the banding go one frame or more to each side as well as sitting in the opening. The location will show you where the leak is happening. Remember, lots of time a leak happens after the film is exposed and is wound forward.

Sounds like a missing or decayed seal. Depending on handling ofthe camera and on light angles, you can get sporadic leaks like you describe. Push on the back in various areas and see if there is a lot of flex.

The 35RC foam usually has turned to gum. See if they have been updated.
