Nenad Bojic on Noctilux

Wow, I´m really glad this topic has been brought back to attention. Maybe the title of the thread wasn´t too catchy ...

Sorry, Ned. I´ll work on it. Anyway, thanks again for your thoughts here and in the article. Cool.

A new one? I predicted this a few years back.

The Leica glass lab has been closed for some time now, perhaps 1990. Noctilux requires 10 ( ten) years of slow cooling so it does not crack or get other internal defects. Nobody is going to make it for them and supplies have to be running out. That stops the 75 1.4 and wherever elso it was used.

I have held a reject sample back when you could talk to a real Leica rep who knew something. It is so dense it feels like a piece of lead really, not glass at all. The 1" cube was about a pound.

10 years cooling down time ?? I heard it takes about 18 month ?

I have read somewhere that it takes several years.

I don't understand the "need" for a new Noctilux. It would presumably be an ASPH lens and therefore highly corrected and what is the point of that? The current Noctilux is kept by people who value the way it renders wide-open, and it does that because of the aberrations in the lens.

You can have a "new" Noctilux now by getting a 50/1.4 ASPH and some faster film.

sssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

pfoto, you don't shoot at nights yeah? ? try to understand how bats live 😉

iso 6400 is not enough with f1.4 sometimes.

If a 'new' Noctilux were somehow different than the current one, why couldn't it somehow be 'better?' Just because the current one is what you know doesn't mean it can't be improved. If the current one did things differently than it does now, you'd accept that as the default, too?

People accepted the Pre-ASPH 50mm Summilux for its fantastic qualities. Now, there's a 50-ASPH, and it's acclaimed as the best 50 in the world. Nothing wrong with a 'new classic.'

Thanks, guys!

On another note: A new Noctilux? I want it. And I hope it is different then the current one just so I can justify adding it to my lens rotation. I'm already drooling...

If I liked those different things I'd certainly be interested. But my assumption is that if Leica does produce another f1 lens it will be like the 50/75 ASPH lenses but one stop faster than the 50. If I am wrong, I will be as interested as everyone else to see what the lens is like.
