Neopan 400 film

I found a roll of Neopan 400 fillm in a camera I recently bought. I didn't know if it had been exposed or not but I ran it through (another) camera anyway. The first 5 frames were double-exposed and ruined. (nothing interesting as double exposures can sometimes be. This is the first time I've tried this film and I have to say I really like it. I have been using HP5+ for 15+ years. (back before it aquired the suffix +) I think the grain is smaller and tighter. Here is a link to a new photo in my gallery that was made with this film. It is a slightly cropped 11by14 inch print. With HP5+, the grain would be very noticable, but it is not bad at all with this film.

I was just at the camera store on Saturday and the guy there was trying to talk me into trying the fuji acros 100 - he gave me the brochure for it. It looks really good. Nice tonal range, silky smooth tight grain. I have to try it one of these days.

Frank, that shot is awesome. Grain fits it too.

Alas, the labs I have access to can't do a reasonable job with the neopan negs. Tried 400 and 1600, it's always too contrasty and the grains are big and elongated, ant-like. I really really need a good subject to get a reasonable photo out of it this way. So neopan will have to wait until i can process my own BW.

Early next year, i hope.

EDIT: ironically, my current avatar is on neopan1600... heavily cropped too. But in this size, it's okay.

I have 2 rolls of Neopan 400 and 2 rolls of HP5+ ready for the lab and I am looking forward to the results. The lab uses XTOL so we'll see what that looks like. I have heard that Acros 100 is marvellous in Rodinal (is that right?) and I would like to try that too.

I really like Neopan 400 as well. Tighter, smoother grain than Tri-X, my other fav. I develop it in Rodinal 1:50 which is not a fine-grain developer, but it still comes out sharp and smooth.

I have some Acros 100 in the Bessa right now. I'm looking forward to seeing the results. Just need to get out from under the gloomy weather we've been having. Not the greatest for shooting iso 100...
