Neopan 400 pushed to 800

sounds like experience talking there.

could I hijack a bit??

I have just loaded a roll of Neopan 1600 to dev in D76 at 20degC. I shot it at 1200 --ie pulled it one stop.

My 2nd ever roll to soup myself. dev and agit advice. I do have rodinal on hand but there were many frames against the sun. I got the impression somewhere that rodinal and blown highlights don't get on..

I haven't shot Neopan 1600 at 1200 iso. My gut feeling would be to use D-76 at 1:1 for about 8 minutes 15 seconds at 20 degrees C.

diafine. hands down. results will vary, acufine is good too, really diafine will make neopan 400 act more like 800. Look into it. it's a 2 process developer, but it's 3 minutes in each process. at 68º F/20º C, you're looking at 9.5 minutes in D76, and that's not pushing it to 800. You're probably looking at more like 11-12 minutes pushed. Really all depends on your temperature and developer...

Diafine is very good, gives an effective ISO of 640 with Neopan 400. ISO 2400 with Neopan 1600.

Bellyface's D-76 time is for a 1:1 solution, not a straight stock D-76 solution. For Neopan pushed to 800 in D-76 at 1:1 the time is 13 minutes at 20 degrees C.

I'm just Corp of Trucks but my course instructor at boot camp was infantry and very good. I surprise of lot of young guns at the range. I am flukey.

btw, before you ask, its all I can brag about - I'm a weekend warrior only and have never been called on to work on the 2-way range.
 
I've done around 40 rolls of Neopan 400 pushed to 800 and Diafine has been my favourite developer for this. I found HC110 muddy in the blacks, DDX not as nice as I thought, XTOL ok, Rodinal surprisingly nice, but Diafine didn't even feel like a push. Haven't tried D76 though. My opinions are based on scanning, and obviously only apply to my setup and my own incompetencies 😀
 
Diafine should give you pretty good results. I shoot Neopan 400 at 650 usually when developing in Diafine, but there seems plenty of scope left for a little extra. You'll have no problems with blown highlights.

BTW, Huron Camera in the US will happily send you Diafine.

Actually, that's only pulled half a stop - a full stop would be 800.

Rodinal works really nicely with this film. Of the top of my head, 8.5 minutes at 1+50. Agitation - 5 inversions at the start of each minute for first three minutes, then one inversion each minute. Agitation is the key to not blowing things with Rodinal - some folks get over excited it seems 😀
