I just developed a roll of Fuji Neopan SS, first time Ive ever worked with this stock. What is the natural base color of this film? The stuff I just pulled out of the tank is pink, much more pink than I would consider to be normal. Developed in FG-7, fixed in a tank with FP200, Acros and APX100, everything cleared, so I dont think it was the fixer, but fixed for an additional five minutes and its still pink. Wondering what is normal for this film.

thanks

Yep, that is what I got with 100SS. I tried it because of the price. But I found it had the grain of Neopan 400 and availability was intermitent so I gave up trying to dial it in.

Every time I process Neopan 100SS, I am freaked out by how pink/purple the base is when it comes out of the tank. I worry if my fix is exhausted, or if I poured in water by mistake. But the negatives are always fine. As a test, I have a few frames of this film tacked to a board in my office that gets lots of sunlight, just to make sure they won't fade over time. Three years later, they are still very purple, but the density has not changed at all, so I have to assume the stuff is fine. I still find the purple base very unnerving, but otherwise harmless.

aye, maybe this is normal then...

anyone have a developer they like with this? Judging by the results I got form FG-7, Im going to try microphen tomorrow, bet it'll be cool.

I too get a very purple negative when it comes out of the tank. Has anyone else also noticed how thick the film is? I find its much thicker than films like Tri-X.

I normally develop SS in a mix of Xtol and Rodinal. It has a tendency to make imaes a little grainy, which is what I prefer. Ive found SS to be very forgiving and also give more grain than my other 100 speed film Plus-X.

I get purple base as well, but I did not notice the thickness vis-a-vis Tri-X. Developed mainly in HC110 dil B.

Fujifilm B&W, err... film, appears to have plenty of colors to it. The base are purple-y, and when I drain the fixer, it is usually pinkish in color for 5-10 mins and then colorless again. I don't get that with Kodak and other brand of films.

No issue with scanning after, so I'm guessing this is the character of the film.

Purple it really is. It has been that way ever since. The old negatives in the family album, many on Neopan SS, are purple.
