neopanSS 100 developing

I have a some rolls of this film 100, speed, it's a fine grain film and the only dev I have and use is Rodinal.

I developed a roll in the Rodinal according to the suggested times etc but it doesn't appear to be that fine grained, so I was wondering if anyone here has experience developing this film in Rodinal and getting fine grain results.

my experience is that SS is not fine grain in Rodinal. Acros would fit the bill.
 
some of the nicest images I've seen come from Acros in Rodinal.
I happen to really like what I've gotten with SS in Rodinal, and I'm not sure I've used anything but rodinal for the SS, however the Massive Dev chart does have three listings for ID11 for SS, so it'd probably be worth experimenting
 
I worked through 180 rolls of SS over the last few years (still have 20 left here ).
Tmax developer 1:4 at 5min 20c has been with minimal agitation gives me the finest grain although I have only tried a few others.
SS is not fine grain film. It's texture and moodiness is why I bought a big box of it.
 
Thanks Andy, that's were I'm going wrong then, I had a pile given to me, and as I had never used it before I just went by what was written on the box re it being fine grain. So really all I have to do is reconsider when I use!

It is "old-school" stuff containing lots of silver and is good for fine differentiation of tonal values but not for fine grain. I got some nice results using HC-110 "B" with Neopan 100SS.
 
thanks guys, tips much appreciated. It's amazing, Ive been a full time photographer for so long now that I know nothing else, yet still there's lots I don't know, and for those times I always get an answer here.

I happen to use Neopan SS in Rodinal for most of my low-ISO stuff lately, simply since a nearby store has a huge box of August 2010 expired stuff for sale cheap (50c a roll converted, compared to the usual 4-7$ for a roll of decent fresh stuff).

I like the look of it pushed to EI160, developed 1:50 20min with agitation every 1.5min, personally. Developing at box (15min 1:50) or lower, or stand-developing, also works out well technically, but I personally don't like the look quite as much.
 
mtargz, thanks for that info and link, I like that look too. I really liked the previous pic ala Winogrand of the girl on footpath, girl on bike, and other person in background all in some kind of unison, was that also on neopanSS?
 
Wasn't me - it shows pictures by other photographers there. I've only uploaded this one so far - but I'll have a look tomorrow if I can fetch other Neopan SS samples that are more than tonal scales.
 
to mtargz oops sorry about that! thanks for your advice, I do like the look you got with your exp and dev, it gives the film a depth that I didn't get with standard dev times etc for it.

Searching my Flickr, I found three examples of stand-developing. I reckon exposure has been less than precise on a meterless Minolta AL, but probably not more than a stop over/under box speed.

Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3. The lens was quite fogged and fungus-infected, so flare-performance and softness are quite problematic.

Another option for cheap is Lucky's SHD100. In 135, it's both cheap and a great portraiture-film; seems to me more red-sensitive than, say, my currently-regular Tri-X - I rarely regret not having had filters back when I stocked Lucky (unfiltered Tri-X can make lips seem black). Other than a bit of a gaussian-blur mask, I barely processed this shot, for example, and split-toning was all that was needed here. This one probably deserves a re-scan, again barely processed.
 
I almost always push SS a few stops, and have found D-76 to be a really nice developer for this purpose. This is at 400, D-76 1:1, 11 minutes:

I'm quite fond of SS in Fuji SuperProdol, as well. Again at 400, SPD stock, 10 minutes:

The one developer with which i've had no luck is Rodinal. I think it amplifies the attributes of SS that, for me, are the least appealing.
