The serial number ties in with the usual references, 825001 being a IIg in the Solms museum.

Being so uncommon it would need verification somehow, it is probably not a difficult camera to 'impersonate'.

Must confess I would have sent this to Westlicht rather than put it on Ebay.

I know little about the Ig/IIg/IIIg, they are not my cup of tea, but would be interested to hear what others think...

Seriously folks, would you buy museum-worthy antiques by mail from a seller whose sparse past history seems to be limited to Honda Civic parts and crib furniture?
 
The one in the ebay auction has the wrong winder knob. It should have the film reminder windows as are found on the IIIf and real IIIg bodies.
The knurling around the front of the rangefinder lenses appears to be missing in the ebay ad but the images are small enough to possibly obscure those, if they are in fact present.

My money is on it being a forgery. A good one but still a forgery nonetheless.

It wouldn't be all that hard to make a "clone" IIG, but its pretty hard to fake engravings, I've got a few FSU Leicas, and although similiar enough to fool the unknowing, the scripts and depths of the engravings are very far from Leica standard.

Most forgers don't seen to put in that extra bit of effort, possibly lacking proper equipment.
I wouldn't put money anywhere near something like this without a physical inspection.
 
Did any of you try to Add this to you watch list and got the log in fields and both fields were empty?
I am already logged in to ebay but still got the log in page. I believe this is a pishing scam.
If you think you logged in you have now revealed your ebay credentials.

I just tried reporting the item and get the same log in page. I am sure this is a scam. Don't log in using the log in page that pops up.

I was already logged in when I found it and am not watching it...well at least i think so...

We'll see...

As to the camera itself there are three options as I see it:
1. It is a real IIg
2. It is a physically modified IIIg
3. It is a photoshopped IIIg


...but I am not going back to the item for a second look!
 
I did report the listing but it often takes them a long time to remove fraudulent listings and often they don't see the problem, i think they have many inexperienced people watching over these listings.
I talked to one a few months ago and really had to explain in details the problem with the listing before she could see it.
 
Here's a thread over on the L-Camera-Forum about this same camera (825 003). It was apparently offered on eBay Australia last year with a BIN of A$55,000 - it didn't sell, and was relisted with a BIN of A$15,000.

And here are some images of a verified IIg sold in 2008 for US$6,306.

I am quite confident I have seen that very picture before. And the account has not been used for sales for several years, and was used to sell used household items back then.

Of course, Mrs. Edna Average might have found her deceased fathers IIg in the attic after clearing it of the car parts and crib furniture, and be using pictures and text off some old, stolen ebay page for the sale. But if she stole the text, she'd have seen the price as well - and would hardly have listed it at 399 quid starting value.

Well... if it's on the internet, it has to be true.

I can see no reason that a person would doubt the authenticity or truth of anything on the internet. Sadly,the world is awash in paranoid loons these days.

Let's not forget that absolutely nothing gets posted on the internet without first being vetted and authenticated by the Global Planetary Internet Truth Verification Directorate. 😀

I put 'legitimacy' down as number 1.

Seriously folks, I started this thread because it is a rare camera that enthusiasts might find interesting.

Let's just leave it there and move on.
