I was visiting a local camera shop, and asked about an M6. Out comes a boxed, perfect black M6 ttl. ...Perfect as in, they never sold it, it was never used, still in its plastic bag.
... and its believable-- that shops been open for over 50 years for one, and two, dont advertise their leica equipment for some reason. Infact as a joke I asked 'so where are the M8s', followed by them allowing a hands on session (different opinion on them in person) with one of three they didnt keep in plain site, along with a silver MP (so smoooth).

But back on topic... $1700. Would anyone else do it? Or is that close enough to be lured by the MP?

(By the way, if you are in by the Detroit Michigan area, check out the dearborn Adray camera. They arent the type that gawk at you when you ask about expensive equipment and dont have a wad of 100s tucked in your ear. Very nice people who love to share photographic joy 😉)

Hmmm... $1700 for an unopened camera? How long has it been on the shelf?

All things considered, the price is kinda right. My only concern would be about movable parts and storage conditions.

Although... OTOH, the camera is still new, and Leicas are pretty much more resilient than we give them credit for.

Ask for a lowered price, though. With sales tax it'd be a somewhat hefty credit card slip.

That seems like a bit of a catch 22 situation ... maybe an M6 unused in it's original packaging is worth that sort of money ... I wouldn't know. The instant you use it though it just becomes another second hand camera with a corresponding drop in value!

I think if I was in the market for an M6 I'd rather spend $700.00 less and have it CLA'd by the experts! I suppose it depends how important the cosmetics are to the buyer and what sort of use it's going to get. 😕

They dont have stone set prices. I didnt mean to make it sound like its never touched the atmosphere... they do take it out. I check it out myself, and its operation felt no different than the MP I played with minutes before.

Dangerous position-- purchases this weekend only, they are offering one year same as cash (instead of the usual one month). Plus, they take partial trade ins for used equipment...
I know Im already know Im taking home a canon L on friday. Maybe if they did go a bit lower, I think id be quite tempted to walk out with that M just because of the one year same as cash. Uhhg. From that point of view... that makes that black M8 look that much frendlier, given I also get payed that day 🙁 case of the price creep.

i'd do it for...$1200 or so. much more than that, and even i would prefer saving for a used mp.
I duno. I see used non-ttl M6s going for 1200 in good condition. But regardless, the fact its so close to the MP makes you look at that. Then like I said, price creep. If youre going to spend that much, 1 year no interest makes the M8 look that much closer.

Hm. Ill just stop thinking about it now, and let a likely latter regretted impulse purchase lead me this friday.

I bought my two M6 ("classic") in 1996 and they cost $2,000 each then, new of course. So if you look at it that way, you're getting a discount. Question is how much the lack of excersise can hurt it.

I do not remember the price my ex paid for my M6c, but $1200 to $1500 sound right. Do you how long she has been sitting? I'd get a price from DAG or Sherry on CLA and figure that into your total cost of ownership. Were they the first camera store to own her? Dam, you throw in the M8 thing and it gets harder to figure out what I'd do.

M6ttl, MP, M8, I think I would go with the M8. The M8 gets you square into digital, which, for better or worse, is here in force. You can always get a good film based M and have it CLAed by the experts for less money.

Keith is right, drop a roll of film in her and she has lost value much faster than a MP or an M8. While she might be in better condition, the M8 just sounds like a better deal. Check to see about the lens discount, free IR filters, or what ever extra you can get.

ottomh i recall, with rebates and incentives, i paid $1,750 for my M6 (not-ttl), new, from the dealer, way back when. so i'd venture that $1,700 is the shelf price from a certain era. it probably still has "the paperwork" to cover the passport(?).
of course it all depends if you want (or need) that specific camera/model. compare the price of what it would cost you for a new M7, MP, of M8, or look at the used market and...it all depends what you want...

With a new camera you get one thing; peace of mind. It should not have any nasties lurking inside and has clearly not been abused. If they throw in a basic CLA for the shutter you have teh same peace of mind as buying new with that 1 year warranty. You rarely get that with a used camera as we all know once in a while there is a gremlin inside. However, if you actually want an MP, you would be making a big mistake. You have to be sure you want an M6 TTL rather than just going for it because it is new. It wont be new once you ave used it.

You can fairly frequently find ANIB M6 classics in the $1300 range. The problem with this $1700 camera is that it probably needs at least a partial CLA right now to ensure that the shutter runs properly if it's been sitting that long.

I paid €1100 for my black M6 (it was the "backup" camera of a known photographer who'd gone digital and didn't need two Leicas; it was/is in perfect condition.) but it came with a Summicron 35/2 pre-asph - 4th version - and a Tele-Elmar.
I was lucky, I think. 🙂

Hi black-box,

if you intend to use the "unsed" M6 then I would go for a user M6 (non TTL anyway) for around 1k and I agree with patashnik get yourself a nice Summicron or Planar on top for the savings on the body. This unused M6TTL would be moe of a collectors item. Just don't use it and wait for it to go up in value.

There doesn't appear to be any shortage of good condition used M6s on the market, so I agree with those advising that you save some money and get one of those instead.
