Announcement of this lens expected soon. Anybody else have info about this?
I would be happy to do a little translating if anyone is interested in what Mr. Miyazaki has written here 🙂

MTF at f/1.4 seems quite poor.
He says modern lenses are poor in their ability to alter their image quality using the aperture, and didn't want to make another bland copy, so he redesigned this formula by hand in order to bring out the beauty of its aberrations (paraphrased).

How soon do you think? I had a 50mm Sonnetar once and found it too hard to use. Nevertheless,I liked it for the small size and weight. Also I'm nearly an exclusive 35mm shooter, so I'm very interested in the lens. Are there any other infos about it? The text only describes the lens, but not it's availability...

Not sure. His FB post says announcement date soon, and members of Hataya Camera can place orders. Expected retail around ¥100,000.

Do I read 90g (115g with hood) right? That's ridiculously tiny...

You read right. Listed size and weight is small indeed...

I predict glow in massive amounts.
Have a glance at the MTF versus the Summilux and I think you'll see what I mean....

Info page states: at f1.4 low flare and good contrast in the ∅15 central portion of the frame, with flare increasing in the mid and outer zones. At f1.7 this central good portion extends to ∅25, and at f2 extends out to ∅30 (paraphrased).

it looks like very close to the Pre-Lux but without that extra element just after the aperture.
I like the fact that theres a big shift from 1.4 even to 2.8, and that confirms what you translated thank you. If I've seen an MTF that screams "In Between F-Stops" its this one. I'm intrigued...

woah - this is tiny!
first time I ever thought about getting one of his lenses - I'm no good at reading lens data graphs but 2.3cm for f/1.4? nice!

I've sent him some lenses for conversion to M recently, the exchange rate is very favorable.

40/1.7 from Canon QL17 GIII, very tiny and light. And 10 blades. 🙂

Only very slightly lighter than a 40 cron, not to mention the 50 elmar.

"Ridculously tiny" is what got the whole 135 system started. 🙂

I'd love to know a ballpark figure on the current cost to convert a CZJ 50/1.5 from contax to M, at the moment. That 40 sounds interesting, what's it like?

Someone should have a heart and fully translate his sheet on this new lens for us 🙂 Mr Miyazaki is nothing if not prolific!

On par with the 35lux pre ASPH, which is pretty normal given that the lens is a plain 6/4 double gauss. Plus that it's tiny. We'll just have to see how it glows...

Which would put it ahead of the CV 35/1.4 wide open.

A partial list of Miyazaki-sensei lens conversions with pics and prices can be found here:

Moreover, any specific inquiry can be sent directly to the guys at Japan Exposures, they are taking care of Miyazaki-sensei conversions for customers within and outside Japan. I recently had a Nikonos W-Nikkor 35/2.5 converted in M-mount and it took only 2 weeks, great service!

I'm curious how many RFF members can translate Japanese to English?
Gets me thinking about a couple other things too. Like why don't we have English proficient Japanese members here?

Head bartender, are you interested in creating a Japanese language forum? Too complicated to moderate?

Slightly off topic, but I would love to see what the Canon QL 50/1.7 lens looks like in M mount. Any chance we could see that?

I also looked at the MS-Optical website to see the list of lenses that can be converted (and how much). I was absolutely delighted to see the Minolta Hi-Matic E 40/1.7 in that list, as well as the Rollei Zeiss Planar 50/1.8 (QBM mount). Those are the two lenses that have had the greatest influence on my strong affinity for high quality prime lenses and rangefinder cameras in general. Those 2 lenses exactly. So now I'm thinking of converting these for my M system. Why not? My Hi-Matic doesn't work anymore, and I sold all my Rollei QBM gear (except that Planar, for some reason).

Back to the topic. This new 35/1.4 looks beautiful, and I'm sure it will perform just fine for most shooters. Most serious shooters learn to work with their lenses, and even exploit "errors" to their advantage. I wish I could afford one of these.......but then, I need to figure out how I'm going to convert my 40/1.7 and 50/1.8 now. The cost might be "reasonable" considering what you get, but its still a fair expense.
