I am currently shooting RAW images with a Nikon D3S, and I am running Lightroom 4.1 with SilverEfex Pro (the first version--I have SEP2, but it crashed so much that I went back to using the first version and have never had a problem with it). Here are my questions:

I'm thinking of adding a small camera--Sony RX100III, Fuji X100T, or something similar. I know that I can alway shoot JPEG and won't have to upgrade the software, but (Question #1) if I want to shoot RAW with the new camera, will I need to upgrade to LR5? (Question #2) If I upgrade to LR5, will SEP still work as a plugin, or will I have to upgrade to the new Google version of NIK?

Thanks!

You will certainly have to update to at least the version of Lightroom that will support the camera you want (for the Sony RX100III raw files, that is Lightroom 5.5 or later).

I don't use Silver Effects Pro. Doesn't this run as a separate application? Or is it a plug-in? If it's a separate application, which version of LR you use shouldn't matter. For a plugin, you'll need to check their documentation for compatibility.

You can also convert the raw files from your new camera into DNG using the (free) software Adobe makes available. The DNG files are usable as usual on Lightroom 4.1

That's true, but it's a bit clumsy as a workflow and you're missing out on some of the great new bits of LR 5.

I got LR 4.4 and SilverEfex Pro 2 at the same time (came with the camera), and have since upgraded to LR 5.6. SilverEfex took the upgrade just fine and works as normal as a plug-in. Don't know about the earlier version.
