Right, so once I get the rolleiflex covered in new leather, and a new fron piece mounted, that project is as good as done.

Here's my new project(s ) - spy camera!

If I get any money from this god-awful warehouse job then: Buy a F-21 spy camera, and source 16mm b&w film ((i'm working on the assumption it takes 16mm)). Go shooting with it. Source a 16mm developing reel, or mod a cheap plastic (or maybe a metal) reel.
--- this will cost quite a bit - I've seen F-21's on ebay for about £100, and then it's £20 or so for bulk 16mm film I guess! OR get a film cutter and slice down some 35mm, but if I source 16mm cheap enough, then this will be a waste of 35mm.

OR

Buy a F-21, modify the little beast to accept 35mm, and use 35mm cans. Maybe irreversible, unless I make a different back for the camera - feasible idea?? ((I'm keen on this one))

OR

Make my own:
I have a small very short focal length lens acquired from an ancient security cam (16mm I think), and I was thinking... if you can make a pinhole cam from a matchbox, maybe its possible to stick this lens on a tiny body, and stick a modest shutter on it too? ...maybe from a micro-110 camera or a toy camera or something? ..This would be a lot of effort, suffer from light leaks, and I'll no doubt give up before I finish the project. Anyone else tried it though???

So those are my options I think - am I missing anything?

What's the best one to go for do you think??
Anyone know of 16mm film sources (black and white) ?
Anyone already tried this? (Not pinhole) Or any links that may be of help for that matter!

If I'm missing something fundamental (like a very small 35mm spy camera), let me know! 🙂

Thanks all

as for the rolleiflex - I'm getting the money to Victor M for the new front piece that should arrive soon - Vic, your money will be sent as soon as it arrives, I need to arrange using a friend's paypal, is that ok?
And Kim, I'm waiting for your word on leather for the camera 🙂

EDIT: I take it I need the film at 20/21/22mm wide. so slicing is necessary??

Brian, I like my candid shooting, and I'm also one of those people who prefers something different 😀

Frank, you'll have to spare my ignorance an explain further 🙂

GAH! I think I might save and *shoot me now* pay for one from Lomo O_O

Just another RFF member with many plans for building/using alternative camera gear. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Ahh ok (I'm guessing you mean Stephanie Brim, is it? I'm sure I've seen her name on a few of the pinhole cam threads etc).

I really don't want to spend $1000 on a russian spy camera, but it'll take as many days of careful planning and manufacture to make one, as to save for one probably. hmm well.... if I work 8 hours shifts 5 days a week at minimum wage for 3 weeks, I should be able to afford it.
Damn my 'want it, can't live without one' attitude!

You might as well start getting used to it. If you are like many of us, you'll spend most of your life on the 8x5 routine. It's not so bad... earning money means better living!

Have you considered simply getting a sub-miniature camera? There are plenty of affordable half-frame 35mm cameras out there, one of which is the Agat-18K. It's about as large as a packet of fags.

I was looking at those half-frame cameras, but if I'm going sub, I may as well go all the way. If I lose interest at the more expensive and dubious spy cameras, I'll probably settle on an Agat 🙂

What about my avatar? 😛

And Frank, my idea is quite a bit different from his. Very, very large. The thing is going to be monstrous and I plan to take a photo of it next to my Canon P for scale.

As for the do-it-yourself idea, I don't see why it can't be done or shouldn't be done...go for it. If we didn't have experimentation and brainstorming we wouldn't have anything to shoot with in the first place. 😉

Well I'll get started on the DIY shooter with 16mm lens, using 35mm film, as soon as possible. Maybe I'll sort something a bit more permanent than the matchbox pinhole method (that requires excessive amounts of tape, and is one-shot). I think I may buy a F-21 at the end of next week if there are many available, it may help with......inspiration 😀

Here we go... See the attached file for the lens on a matchbox. stage one completed 😀

I'm going to 'borrow' a few ideas from here http://www.blog.co.uk/index.php/alspix/2005/12/31/matchbox_pinhole~428481

The lens projects a small circular image against the inside of the matchbox. Hardly worth bothering with. I might see about a different lens to give a larger projection, but I don't really want anything much bigger/bulkier, and the 16mm is built to have its own hood to prevent flaring.

Once I'm happy with this lens or a second, larger lens, I'll build a matchbox-sized enclosure, add a primitive shutter (I'm thinking a piece of black cloth on a spring/lever), and find a way of enclosing either 2 film carts, or a takeup spool and a rewind mech (no doubt just 2 spools/carts for ease)
