Camp Snap has now introduced a new PRO model:

CS-PRO PRE ORDER

This looks to be a "pro" camera in about the same way my ten-pound Havanese is an Iditarod sled dog, but it does look like an improvement on previous Camp Snap models and a fun little toy. The idea of an ultra-simple screen-free digital camera appeals to me, and I've been wanting a compact digital camera for quite a while. Might be a bit of fun to play with.

I took a look but it seems to be nothing more than a slightly cheaper rip off of a Leica M11D with a 28mm Summaron. It does seem to have a flash though.

"slightly cheaper" ... You are a master of understatement. 😉

M11-D $10,055.00
Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 $3420.00
total: $13,475
-
Color Snap Pro $99.00

Slightly cheaper in this case means discounted by 99.3%. Such a rip off!

Rather than spending that egregiously costly sum for the Color Snap Pro, I think I'll stick my Summaron 28 onto my M10M and go make some photos. 😀

@kshapero Thanks for posting the photos. Those look pretty good!

I have a couple of questions about this camera. First, I've seen reviews of the original Camp Snap that say the viewfinder is not very accurate (maybe some of them use terms closer to "wildly inaccurate…"; it's been a while since I read or watched them) How is the viewfinder on the CS Pro? Obviously it wouldn't be reasonable to expect a viewfinder as good as a Leica M3, but I think something that's wildly inaccurate would bother me.

I'm also curious if the EXIF data indicates how the camera sets exposure. I would expect the lens probably has a fixed aperture, and the camera probably varies shutter speed and/or ISO to accommodate lighting conditions. Is this correct?

@WoodallP @Godfrey — Your posts made me curious so I looked up the specs for the lens on the CS Pro. Per Camp Snap's website, the lens is "f/2.2, 2.56mm (22.5mm equivalent in 35mm terms)," which is more in the focal length range that I'd classify as a super wide (sub-24mm). It looks like the only prime lens wider than 28mm that Leica presently offers is the 21mm f/3.4 Super Elmar M ASPH. So you can't buy a Leica super wide angle lens as fast as the CS Pro at any price!

I think there is still a Summilux-M 21mm 1.4 on sale but I must admit I picked the Summaron for it's flatness (physical not optical). I actually have the 21mm Super Elmar and it is far from flat.

It's interesting. Their page says "22.5mm equivalent" but the numbers don't line up with that ... The 1/3.06" sensor on 3:4 format nets about a 3.6 x 4.8 mm format size, and a 2.56mm lens on that format sensor nets closer to a 19mm FoV according to Rui Salgueiro's field-of-view calculator (a FoV calculator I've been using since about 1998, and which has always been accurate) ... So something doesn't line up.

That said, since this is essentially a cheap 16Mpixel cell phone camera packaged into a compact 35mm film camera sized box, comparing it to any Leica FF sensor fitted with a Leica lens isn't really an appropriate comparison. I wonder if its image quality is on par with an iPhone 15 Pro, never mind the latest in iPhone or Android smartphone cameras.

But it does look like a nice toy camera, and toy cameras can make lovely photos in the right hands. Eh? 😉

Yes, I was totaling joking in my post above. The CS Pro and the various Leica digital cameras are alike in that the both have lenses and sensors and take pictures, but that's about it.

And yes, toy cameras can certainly make great photos in the right hands.

I'm saving my money for this:

Kodak Charmera Key Chain Digital Camera

I'm thinking it's gonna blow the doors off the Leica M11-D with the Summaron, and for $39, I'm betting it's gonna be really great image quality.

Best,

They have a 72-hour flash sale going on now (2 days and 17 hours left at the time of this posting) on bundle pricing (camera plus accessories) if you want to save a few dollars.
The only thing on these cameras I'd be leery of is the strap lugs look like they are molded in place, so easy to snap off or wear through quickly. A tripod mount strap would be best to use.

My green model is scheduled to arrive soon. I think I'll skip the "Pro" model for now.

I don't think this applies to the Pro model. I'm tempted anyway. ... but what do I really need Yet Another Camera for? 🤔
