I have added a digital rangefinder category to the gallery. If you have pictures taken with such a camera, please move them there at your convenience.

OK this will seem silly... But I will ask anyway.
Does my Canon G2 qualify? I don't have a focus ring on the lens. But I can and often do use the viewfinder rather than the screen.
Any decision is fine with me. Just curious.

My definition of a rangefinder, you can frame, focus and shoot with a lenscap on without noticing.
In this regard, the Canon G2 does not qualify as a rangefinder

Trust me... I have done so. Easy to do If you aren't using the screen.
Post Script... The G2 is no less vulnerable in this regard than an RD-1, which also sports- a screen.

Was worth a try
Wonder how that would fare for users of the Panasonic DMC-LC1 or the Digilux 2?

I'm trying to get a username and a pw for the galleries for more than a month now ........ i gave up.
Tried to create a complete new acount like suggested somewhere but this went wrong on "we have e-mail adress already in database ..." ..... would love to put a gallery up though!

Might i suggest that to be a 'rangefinder' a camera needs a rangefinder?

I still haven't managed to set up a gallery but a recent "digital rangefinder" picture attached.

I had the Canon Powershot G1 until august 2003 when I gave it to a friend to shoot her newborn.
And now I remember that it either gave an error message or popped the Lenscap off when it extracted the lens.
Wish my Contax G2 could do this

LCT: That would be the obvious, literal approach choice, but it leaves out so many classic cameras (I'm talking film cameras here) that are "rangefinder in spirit" if not in fact. In the day, a rangefinder was a functional unit that some cameras had built-in and other cameras needed and external RF unit placed on the accessory shoe.

Hi Frank,
Would you say that any compact digicam is a "rangefinder in spirit" or would you suggest a way to separate the wheat from the chaff if any?

It's a bit harder with digital cameras. With film cameras there are definitely classic scale focusing cameras that deserve to be included. (eg. Rollei 35, Bessa Perkeo, Bessa L and T)) With digital, I'm not sure. I'm a little biased against digital cameras, if truth be told.

Hi Socke! My G2 is slightly modified, it has a Lensmate "tube" that allows for 49mm filters and such. I keep it on the camera. When you "boot" the G2 it senses mechanical resistance on the extending lens and gives an error just like the G1. But when the Lensmate tube is attached (as always on my camera) it doesn't sense that the lens is being restricted from extending. So now, I have this "feature" that allows me to shoot with a lens cap on if I am using the viewfinder instead of the screen.Socke said:I had the Canon Powershot G1 until august 2003 when I gave it to a friend to shoot her newborn.

I was just playing "Devil's Advocate," the RD-1 is the true and rightful owner of the title for "the one and only digital rangefinder."

I'm such a dope...can someone tell me where this category is? I can't find it in the list of "categories." I'd like to feed my digiGAS a little.

I have a puzzle for you.
If I modified my R-D1 so the LCD could display a live view(like a pointn'shoot), would it still be a rangfinder??

It would still be a rangefinder, because it would still have an optical rangefinder for focusing the lens.
It just wouldn't be a camera, because such a modification would require removing the shutter.
