New Contax Owner Question

I received my latest addition yesterday.😀 It is a G1 with the 28, 45, and 90mm lens. Everything looks cherry and I am really pleased with how well it is built. This is actually the first "G" I have held and it feels quite solid. I just have one question for now and that is where can I find a cable release?😕 Kind of disapointed that there is no mechanical cable release socket, but after seeing the quality of the images taken with this little camera I think I will be able to get over it.😉

They show up on the bay from time to time... there are three different lengths, if I remember right (1m, 3m, 10m?) so note which one you want.

Also, make sure it says its for Contax G... some of the other Contax cameras use an electronic release, but with a different plug that is not the correct one (the wrong one looks like a 3/32 stereo earphone jack).

Wish someone had a schematic for one... probably not to hard to build yourself if you have the right plug ( a few diodes and a switch?)

I bet KEH gets them from time to time, too, but haven't seen one in recent weeks.

Thanks Issy, it is something that I can work around for the time being but eventually I would like to be able to do some long exposures. I saw some on e-bay but thought exactly what you said. Thanks again.

For some reason, KEH seems to always put the remote switches under "Contax" not "Contax G". Look under "Camera Accessories" / "Releases and Remotes". The ones for the G1/G2 are the Cable Switch L. They have several!

I don't have a G1 around, but I found that I could screw a regular cable release into this little hole on the side of my G2 and it actually tripped the shutter. Was this an addition to the G2 not seen on the G1?

If you believe the G2 Manual, using a mechanical release "may cause a malfunction".

I read that as well. It would be great if I could use a cable release but I would hate to damage my new camera. 😱

I tracked these on eBay for a while, and time after time the price would go through the roof and I'd back off. I'm not going to pay $42 for one of these off eBay when I can get a New one from KEH for $25 or 29, depending on the length. Right now they have only 100cm and 1000cm lengths (I got my cable switch L-100 from them last month), though there is a 30cm length made too.

May be not as hazardous as probing a power socket with knitting needles, at least to the one trying.

anyway, how does the proprietary cable release work? does it not just close the circuit to trip the shutter?

Yes, but electricaly not mechanicaly. It's just a cable with a switch.

I was pissed off of the high price tag of the Minolta SLR cable release so I made one myself.
No big deal,really.
That's electric as well, has 3 pins for focus and shutter release.

hmmm. i better not tinker around for the time being. the G2 is barely 3 days old. and i just finished processing the first roll of film. the cable release is not that expensive after all. it is just not available here in the philippines. thanks, socke.
