You've received some great suggestions. I hesitate to throw anything further your way, but if you want to get off the beaten path for the inland part of your trip, the small towns along the border between Vermont and New York are photogenic in a rough-hewn (non-touristy) sort of way and the countryside is as beautiful as anywhere in New England. I'm thinking of places like Hoosick Falls (Grandma Moses country), Eagle Bridge, and Cambridge, NY. I lived in that neck of the woods (in and around Bennington, Vt) for ten years, and the entire area is worth exploring. If you draw a line between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers through Rutland, Vt on the north end and Great Barrington, MA on the south, the area w/in that rectangle is extraordinarily beautiful and interesting.
On the coast, if you're going up through Maine, a visit to some of the islands would be a treat, e.g. Vinalhaven.

Well, my post above (#13) is still valid.

Great suggestions, lots of research being prompted by them, thanks.
Agenda thinking is now something like: Boston > Provincetown > Hyannis > Nantucket > Martha's Vineyard > Woods Hole > Newport > Mystic > Providence > Boston. Some places a couple or so days.
Camera-wise, I'm thinking of Fuji x100s plus Hasselblad 500CM with 50/80/150 and a couple of A12s for FP4+ and Ektar.

That will give you a good picture of southern New England's maritime history.

I'm back now from my trip and had a great time - it's a wonderful part of the world to visit and we managed to fit in several of the suggestions here: thank you for those and I envy those of you living in New England with so much on your doorstep.
The itinerary changed whilst we were there and ended up being:
Boston
Provincetown / Cape Cod
Newport, RI
Mystic seaport, CT
The Berkshires, MA
Bennington, VT
Boothbay Harbour, ME
Ogunquit, ME
Gloucester and Salem, MA
Back to Boston.
I took my Hasselblad 500CM with just the 80mm Planar and a couple of A12 backs and found this to be a very suitable camera - I'll post some shots on the 52Rolls page later. I also had my Fuji XF1 which is a great pocket digital which had a useful zoom for the whale watching trip.
I'd certainly love to return to the Maine coast again - a trip further north upto Arcadia NP would be great, one day.

Glad to hear you had a good trip. Wished I would have known your itinerary as I actually work in Ogunquit
Looking forward to seeing your shots!
