The best camera is one that still works!
I'm still using whatever firmware it came with ...
I guess I should update it.
Thanks for the heads up Gary.

The new fw comes in two files.. The Firestone loads pretty fast. The second takes a bit longer. When it is done, the camera turns itself off. Make sure u got fully charged battery.. Tonight when I started on te dp2m battery status was 100%, by the time I was done it was down a bar ;(. And the update really did not take very long. Could be it was ready to loose a bar anyway.

For those w/ more than one dp Merrill, u can now select the start of te name to be dp1m or dp2m based on camera (in my case).

All done ... now to see if the reports I've heard about noise free files at 6400 ISO are just a wicked rumour started by the Fuji crowd to confuse me.
Ok, so what did the FW add / fix?

Ver. 1.05
Improves the stability of operation.
Improves the precision of bounce flash shooting when ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG SUPER SA-STTL and ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG ST SA-STTL are used.
When you enlarge an image, it used to enlarge the center of the image. However, the new firmware magnifies the image depending on the focusing position.
It is possible to select the file name of the image either from “SDIM” or “DP2M”.
It has integrated the color tones of Custom White Balance (Sunlight, Shade, Overcast, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash) among the DP Merrill series.
Corrects the phenomenon that the AEL setting goes back to default if the AEL button is set for "Central AEL + AEL", and alternate MF to AF or vice versa, while it is still displaying the operation icon.
Corrects the phenomenon that self-timer shooting whilst using P Mode would cancel the program shift for the customized shutter speed and aperture settings if you press the release button.
Properly displays the image according to the selected magnification percentage.
Corrects the phenomenon that the selected exposure is not appropriately applied when an external flashgun is used with Custom Mode.
Corrects the phenomenon that, in rare cases, images are not recorded properly when the battery level is low.
Corrects the rare phenomenon that the recording process does not go perfectly when the camera is turned off right after taking the image.
It displays the size of the file when you select an image and open the Image Info Screen.

Actually I had to have another go at installing the update. When I checked the menu for firmware it had a blank ... just a row of dots though the camera was working fine!
Second time around it overcame this little glitch and now tells me the correct information.

Had that happen once. Kind of worrisome.

The next firmware update may have the improvement to the firmware updater! LOL
I was a little anxious when I noticed what had happened I admit!

Hmm . . . mine hiccuped too. Seemed to load, camera auto shutoff, then firmware showed *****. Then I retried the update and the camera displayed loading 1/2 then 2/2, auto shutoff, and now shows v1.05. All's well that ends well, I suppose.
The camera is new to me and was still on FW v1.01, so I wonder what a difference I'll notice.

I remember when the OMD came out you could only update the firmware by having the camera connected to your computer via a USB lead and linked to the Olympus site. Apparently a few people had their OMD's firmware fried with downloading glitches etc.
Hopefully they've changed that!

Wandering around taking a few pics I think the camera does focus a little faster. I've taken to using the little beast in a very different way currently. With the turret finder mounted and the parallax adjustment set to about seven feet I leave the screen off completely and work totally through the finder trusting my judgement as to where the focusing square area is in the finder and being aware of the confirmation light from the corner of my eye as I press the shutter. It actually turns it into quite fast little shooter and I'm definitely more comfortable being able to bring the camera to my eye when I take a shot.
I'm liking this thing more and more the longer I own and use it ... which hasn't been the norm for any previous digital I've owned.
And since the update that now allows me to do so ... I have it set to shoot black and white in raw.

Pretty close to how I use them.
Outside of leaving my LCD active so I can double check what I am set to...or a grab shot w/ the LCD occasionally, my normal usage is always the LCD. My default setup is raw b&w autoiso max at 3200.
Lcd active is really More really to make sure I did not accidentally change the exposure comp.

Yes ... I've done that with exposure compensation also! :bang:
I trust the metering totally I have to say ... it really is very good and files are flexible enough to make a stop out no real issue.

i think that firmware update thing with the ............... is normal.
that's what happened to me when i installed 1.04. i didn't even realize there were two files and that it was a two step process. RTFM goes a long way

Updated DP2M last night from firmware version *****
Seems like focus becomes faster and less noisy.
