new GTN but how to set asa?

hello all,

i just received a really pretty black GTN but am not sure how to set the asa. only the metal round piece with the printed numbers seems to turn. i figured out the with a pen tip i can tighten and loosen the disc but am unsure where (what direction) to lock it down to.

also, is the textured black round outer ring supposed to turn? i'm assuming that it is supposed to turn and you're supposed to align that ring to the appropraite asa.

That outer ring should have a red marker on it - align that with the film speed.

If the red marker is gone look for an indent.

Don't turn the disc with the numbers on! If you've done that I can take a photo og my GTN so you can align it properly.

thanks for the quick reply. so yes, i have turned the inner written part. and once i did that and started turning i realized i may have messed something up.

so now my big problem is that this outer ring just doesnt turn. i mean it wiggles just a tad but it feels like my finger tips are going to bleed. i wasn't sure if it was supposed to turn so i really didn't put a great amount of pressure on it for fear of breaking something that maybe wasn't meant to turn.

should i use a small flat screwdriver or towel to try and get it to turn? maybe it just needs to break loose?

Sorry, can't help in disassembly - my GTN creaks and squeels but still works fine (except for the frame counter).

if it is similar to the gsn (i think it is), the outer ring does not fully rotate but stops at some moment. Maybe you are at that point. Is it blocked both ways?
If not. just turn it fully towards smaller ISO settings, until it stops. Then turn the ring so that the dot is aligned to the smallest IS setting. Fiux the ring and that's it.
If it is blocked and does not move in any of the directions, time for a repair.

From memory, I think only the external ring turns. It adjusts the opening for the light meter. You should see the two halves of the meter window blind form a diamond shape which changes size as you turn the ring.

My GTN dial is very stiff, so I need to push hard on the edges to turn it. As long as it is on the edges it is OK, if you press too hard on the numbers they can turn independently.

okay, i got the outer asa ring to turn with a little bit of muscle. i seemed to have broken loose whatever was binding it up. it turns with a little resistance and clicks as it goes around.

now i need to loosen and tighten the inner asa numbers to their proper location. any suggestions?

You need to re-align the dial to the disk.
To do this turn the ring as far as it will go clockwise. Now loosen the disk and align the smallest asa setting to the mark. While holding the disk with your finger tighten the cap screw. Make sure the asa is still aligned with the mark and you are set.

well, i shot a whole roll of film to try the camera out. now that the film has been removed i tried the above suggestion and it seems we were way out of alignment. :bang:
