New J9 for my Bessa R

Hey guys,
GAS again! I just bought a new (don't laugh, please..) Jupiter 9 for my Bessa R.

And.. yes I KNOW it’ll not focus correctly! I’m planning to use it at f4 on the Bessa and wide open on the Zorki 1..

Is it so weird?

Rob.

Roberto, let us know how the shots come out, and where you got it (seller on ebay?)....
I'm thinking about it, but I'm always discouraged by the "Russian roulette" game - i.e. improper (dis)assembly, incorrect focusing, etc...

Post some shots when you have them...

Sure I'll do... but don't expect too much! J9 are bad guys... 😛
I already have one in Kiev mount and it always (!) flares without hood..

Btw.. I still love it with the hood! 😀

Cheers,
Rob.

Oscar has my J9 in LTM now. It was very accurate even wide-open and close-up. It had been calibrated for the Leica standard; the focus scale stopped just short of infinity- but at "real Infinity" for the Canon 7. Rendered a very pleasing photo. It was 20% of the cost of the LTM Nikkor 8.5cm f2 that I replaced it with. The Nikkor focus is smooth as butter, but that J9 takes a nice picture.

I have the J-9 in 42mm and it is a joy to use. Sharp stopped down and a wonderful oof wide open. I don't have any reference in rf mount however.

The J9 is a great lens. I use it with a 5cm tubular hood because otherwise it'll flare. But it renders colours very nicely and gives the same slight softness as my silver J8. I love the lens but take it out not nearly enough.

I have been chasing a few j9s on fleabay. Haven't caught one yet.

I like how the out of focus backround in Brian's photo almost has an airbrushed quality to it. Very nice.

I figure that if I had one I would use it with my Bessa and frame it using the 90mm bright lines. Would this be effective?

That would indeed be very effective. 🙂

I got 2 metal Heliopan screw-on hoods; a long one (2.5 cm) and a short one (1.25 cm), and screwed them onto each other. So, effectively I have a 5 cm long hood.

I am having trouble locating something with the correct dimensions here in the US. Google isn't turning up good results for me.

Are the thread specs 49.5mm diameter, with a .75 pitch thread? What should be the effective hood depth?

There is a fabricator here in San Diego that will make parts (Kelly Camera). I can finish it in black, if I go that route.

Bob, a standard 49mm thread lens hood will work just fine. In fact, I was fooling around with a J-9 in LTM last night and put a 49mm lens hood on it. Screwed right in perfectly.

Thanks Walker! Made my day. Now I have to wait 2 weeks for the postman to scowl at me over my Russian package.

Love the locomotive avatar!

Don't know about the depth, but they are your regular run-off-the mill 49mm screw-in hoods, like those used on plenty of othe lenses (e.g. most Pentax SLR-lenses). I use 49mm tele-hoods that I got from americaneagle_camera on Ebay.

Thanks Roman! This is especially nice because I have 49mm filters for my Canon G2 that fit my Lensmate adapter tube.

Now I will look like a total tourist! 😛

Honestly, I'm not really so sure one is absolutely necessary. The only lens I've bothered getting a hood for is my prewar (aka uncoated) collapsible Sonnar. My Jupiter 9 has never flared on me. I really find hoods to be more bother than they are worth on coated lenses. Uncoated is a different story, just because of the nature of glass. But even single coated FSU lenses just don't seem to have any real issues for me, at the longer focal lengths.

Now, I can get my multicoated SC Skopar to flare really easily, but that's a different game...
