New kid on the block!

Hi all,

Ruben is very knowledgeable in RF issues, beam splitters... and more recently, using ND filter gels to darken the patch somewhat for improved focusing. Spyderman offered me Online support, should my Bessa R need alignment. Brian Sweeney is our resident lens expert...
who does wonders with Jupiters.

We've got some substantial talent here!

Welcome Dave... and, before you know it, you'll want a Kiev with its long range finder base 😀

Cheers, mike

Mike, ...i have thought about a Kiev, with that nice long rf base,-but somehow I have reservations about that 'garage door' shutter ! - and having never been near one, I wonder how quiet it is?, as my main interests are candid street photography, in markets, pavement cafes, etc when on vacation in the Greek islands, and I like to be as unobtrusive as possible !,- that's one reason I love my old leaf-shutter cameras - near silent ! I have in the past shot this kind of stuff with my old Nikormat, but everyone for miles knows you've taken a pic!!😡 -also what's a Kiev like for hand-holding slowish speeds? (my old hands are still pretty steady, after a couple of glasses of raki !!) - oh, what the heck ! - it's not going to cost me a fortune to find out !

Regards, Dave🙂

Hi Mike,
Welcome!!
I have just tried out a Kiev 4,and can compare it very favourably with the Fed 2,and Zorki 1,for one main reason---it's large and clear viewfinder,(and the shutter on mine sounds great as well.)
I put off trying a Kiev for months because of the need to duplicate lenses, but I have no second thoughts now.
Darkkavenger(Max)is also a great Kiev fan, with lots of great pics in his galleries.

Cheers,
Brian.

Dave

The contax II and the Kiev can be really quiet if the shutter pretension is not excessive. Both are heavy and can be held steady even at 1/5 sec.
