Hi folks,
thinking is coming to an end. Weeks long I have thought about spending a 1K$ savings to my photo equipment.
A new Ricoh GXR is not to see in the market.
An analog Leica M6 was an idea, but the heck with the scanning?
An used Leica M8 is around up $1300. More saving would have to be done.
An used Leica M9 is around $3.000. No way.
New glass for my Ricoh GXR-M? An used Zeiss ZM 28mm 2.8 was offered for $700. ?
And than I saw this fine Epson R-D1 in eBay. Starting price $1.000, no biddings. Just last year CLA´d in Japan. I had bid the $1.000 and yesterday I won!!
Now I´m totally looking forward to tuesday when I pick up the beauty. I ordered 2GB SD Cards for using it (I only have 32GB cards in my Ricoh...
)
Please let me ask a few silly questions:
Can I use the R-D1 Raws in my Lightroom 4?
Is there anything special to look for when picking up the camera?

There have been many reports of service and repairs on the R-D1 being unreliable and hard to get. I think I would save longer and get the M8, which has framelines for more lenses, is useable with wider lenses, has a better rangefinder, and more pixels. I bought a used M8.2 and have been happy with it.

Congrats Rainer on finding a new camera!
The R-D1 was a camera I wished for a few years ago. I have always been impressed with the color rendering that the Epson does. Yes the M8 is newer and has more pixels, but is pretty useless without the bleedin' IR-cut filters and in higher ISO. Same time, some repairs for the M8 are not hard but simply impossible to get, period.
I was most impressed with your library shot with the GXR-M so I'm looking forward to seeing results from your R-D1!

The epson rd1 is a great camera! You made a great choice
The m8 is great as well but I'm happier with my epson !
Viewfinder being 1:1 and repairs can still be made and are not as costly as the leica!
Have fun with the epson and don't worry about pixels 6mp or 10mp
Neither one very high but all a normal person needs..

I can't imagine why Epson doesn't simply update and re-release this camera with such a market. Even if they did it under the CV (working with CV) name it would be a hit.... assuming the price was reasonable.

Same here.
There's a big market out there currently, with the retro-design thing going on in CSC...
I love my GXR-Ms (can't be said often enough, I truly do) but if the Epson would come out again with a true RF, 1.5 crop and 12MP, I'd probably ditch them after all and go Epson

Congrats Rainer on finding a new camera!
Thanks a lot Johan. Hope to take a nice pic once in a while with the Epson.
Mean reason was to check the rangefinder experience over a longer period to see if it matches for me.

Hope so, thank you.
And guys do you know what one of the little good things now is?
First time in life I can buy a soft shutter release...
Important questions: Convecs, concave, colour???

Wellcome to the club, TKH. The only poblem I have got with my RD-1s is one of RF misalignment. You will have a lot of fun with it.Its 2GB memory capacity and less frames per second will force you to 'think' more of what you want to shoot and how, if you don't want to miss your chance.
I can just get rid of my RD-1s. Another vote for an upgraded Epson in the near future.
Cheers

Thanks.
I spotted these camera over the last eight years. The top plate with the Seiko needles is a dream and the shutter cock is just brillant.
None of my five DSLRs in the last ten years is still at home. Every time the new one came into my house, the old one went the eBay way. And I never missed them. But the Ricoh GXR-M I use since two years will never go. If it fails and couldnt been repaired, it will receive a place on the board of Honour at home.
Also the R-D1. I'm 100% sure that it will be, no, it still is a modern classic.

I think you'll be happy with your decision. I picked up my R-D1 about a year and a half ago and can't imagine ever selling it. Your 35 1.2 will be phenomenal on the Epson.

Also from me a welcome, although I'm not a member of the club anymore. Sold it to fund a M9 and now got a M. But still… I miss the R-D1 sometimes for the feeling while using it. Really an excellent camera with great sensor. I still have the Epson-Image-Thread subscribed for the beautiful images this camera is able to produce.
A very unique and excellent camera. Have fun with it!

Shoot yesterday with M9 and M from a buddy. I didnt had the feeling that the rangefinder itself is great different. I´m looking forward the rangefinder of the Epson.
Only 8 hours than I will receive the R-D1...

looking out
I just sent mine out to Epson Japan for a repair and miss it already.
From the M8 to the R-D1 you lose:
More pixels
A wider rangefinder base
More solid construction (the R-D1 RF is indeed sensitive to knocks and adjustments can be a pain)
Big SD cards (R-D1 can only use up to 2GB, but this is fine, and just enough pictures on one card)
From the M8 to the R-D1 you gain:
Less noise and significantly better high ISO (the M8 can show banding at 640 if not properly exposed)
1:1 viewfinder
Frame "advance" lever
Beautiful Seiko Gauges (I've seen this part apart, it's essentially a seiko chronograph movement, modified to fit this purpose, it's genius).
Cheaper batteries
And very importantly, you can still replace the LCD
Have fun with it, it's a great camera, and at the price they are going for......

Thanks. I think its worth every penny.
The last owner paid $300 for rangefinder adjustment, new leatherette and total check a few month ago with help from the guys of Japan Exposures.

It fits perfect in my hand. The build quality is extrem good. The Nokton 35/1.2 is a little big in the viewfinder. Must look for a little 35mm one. Image quality is nice. My Ricoh GXR-M is quiet better, but thats nothing new and not the point. I look forward to the travel in rangefinder land...

The M9 is even louder and much more annoying when recocking the shutter.
I had a Nokton Classic 35mm/1.4 as my "like-50mm", that fits fine on the R-D1. As my "like-35mm" I used a Minolta M-Rokkor 28mm, it was my main lens on that camera, as I'm more a 35mm shooter.
Have fun!
