In all seriousness I imagine these are replacing the leather cases used previously for new lenses so just a spin out to sell empty ones?
Strange choice to 'go plastic' in this day and age but leather comes at a cost too no doubt. Depressing stuff all round really, thanks for sharing!
 
Let's just go straight to the lowest rung on the ladder:

At $70.00 perhaps it could also be used as a plastic cremation urn for the dearly departed Leica crazies.

It comes in a foam padded box (opening in a foam padded room not required). The packaging seems more expensive than the container...

In depth unboxing & review :) starts around 4:36... almost has a Spinal Tap vibe to it... ....hmmm, uses for that Red Dot...

I think the're cool. Just like mu Nikkor enlarginh lens cases (which comand a.much lower price but made in Japan. Wonder tgere these cases are made Germany or Prc.
 
If they were $10 I might buy a few for some of my old M mount lenses. But $70, who are they trying to kid? Did these get released on April 1st?

I have little doubt that there will be a robust market for these among the Leica faithful. If they do prove popular, maybe there would be a market for these in a variety of lens mounts for $9.99 on eBay. Of course, they would not have an official brand logo on top.

If you just need these for storage, I saw this morning at the grocery store some RubberMaid storage containers for $3.99 for a set of four. Each one is just the right size to hold one of my lenses, except for my 80-200 zoom. You could write the lens name on the side with a Sharpie, and they stack. Of course they don't have a red dot, but they do have red tops, which is pretty close. Your choice: $280 vs $3.99 for a set of four. I don't really need them. I have all my lenses in one plastic container on the shelf. That works pretty well for me.
 
I bought a lot of the Nikon bubbles made for the 39mm enlarging lenses. I also buy them with the lenses in them to get 34.5mm and 40.5mm lens caps with "Nikkor" on them. Usually about $20 each, with the lenses.
 
I just did a quick eBay search, several enlarger lenses with cases and caps available, but most are in the $50 range. Would still be a good deal for the case and original caps, though.
 
I don't know why y'all mock these lens storage cases (aka "acrylic bubbles"). They've been made for many years ... My 1963 Leitz Summicron-R 50mm f/2 is stored in one of them, probably originally supplied with the lens itself ... and it is a great receptacle for keeping the lens clean and dust free when in the storage cabinet. I have one for my Hasselblad Sonnar 150mm f/4, and one each for my Kodak Retina IIc 35 and 85 mm lenses as well. They're beautifully made and well worth what they cost.

At least one of the Kodak models has more than just lens storage function ... the bubble is comprised of a base, a conical section, and the clear top. When you take the lens out, the conical section is fitted to the front of the lens ... it's the lens hood. :)

$70 for them on today's market, new? heh. A simple stretchy lens bag is typically $10-20 ... $70 for a nicely made and well packaged acrylic lens case shouldn't seem so ridiculous.

To contrast, the Zeiss-Ikon Lens Bubble containers for my three Contaflex Super B convertible lenses: Pro-Tessar 35mm (f/3.2), 85mm (f/3.2), & 115mm (f/4). The bubbles came with the lenses as the tops contain Zeiss-Ikon product stickers with matching serial number.

These are very well designed and robust bubbles. Notice the detail on the bottom holder: red registration dot to align with lens dot, metal spring-loaded mount, high-quality plastic, and Made in Germany.

With the Kodak Bubbles, and the Nikon F-Mount Bubbles: the hood mounts backwards on the lens and then the lens is put into the bubble. The bubble itself is the base and clear top.

There are some ingenious designs.
 
Reminds me of the Kiev Avtomat lens boxes but they had a real part of the bayonet in them (made out of metal). Maybe it is green plastics made of wood or something :p

The price leaves me speechless...

I have the original box, bubble, foam piece, silica pack, lens with cap and if I look hard enough the receipt for my EL-Nikkor 50mm f/4 enlarging lens...I can almost see a video in my future...
