hmmm - no announcements by Nikon re: dRF? perhaps it really was vapour ware... or perhaps they've delayed announcing release since the S2 won't be available for some months and this gives Nikon the opportunity to 'one up' the S2???

Doubt it - various articles mention the Kodak sensor and the press conference mentioned Phase One. Besides, Canon tops out at 21MP in a FF 35mm sensor right now.
Cool, at this rate, we'll be able to pixel-peep WIMPs and MACHOs in a few years, and W and Z bosons by the end of the next decade.
And now that there's HD Video recording capability with the new Nikon and Canon DSLRs, CERN should have to just buy stock in either company.
I'm sure Nikon will be able to capture the first nanosecond of the Big Bang, given their Super Holy Status in online forums (forae?)

On the alert
I just got an email from Hasselblad UK that offered me a Hasselblad H3DII with lens and 31 mp back for £9500 plus tax. I hope Leica don't price themselves out of the market before the S2 has even hit the shelves.

Some of us will have to debate what to do first: get an S2 or pay off the student loan

I would have to debate what to do first: get an s2 or go on three-months-around-the-globe trip...(twice).

Hey, at least it doesn't look like the Sony A900... now that's a hideous design.
I think Leica have a made a good choice. Their glass has a stella reputation, and the price is actually pretty reasonable by medium format standards. Considering the number of 500 series Hassblads on ebay amd other places at bargain prices, there seems to be a lot of photogs moving to fully digital MF systems... seems a good time to release a product aimed at that market.
Canon and Nikon are also in no way competition for this space.

Not sure if this has been posted yet. Here is Puts' opinion on the S2:

One has to admit, the faster speed of the new S2 lenses (compared to the competition) is pretty cool.

Speaking of the Simmon, there was one for sale here a couple of weeks ago.
I don't see how this is an unattractive camera -- actually I think it's rather sleek for a DSLR.

The thing I don't like about the design is the fact that from the front it looks like the prism is dismal and small, whereas the look from the back shows that it must be massive. That plus the traditional shutter speed dial plus control wheel layout - two different philosophies in the same body.
Apart from that, the general concept of the camera, kinda a Contax 645 for the digital age, seems like a good idea.

I'm no fan of SLRs in general these days; but I do appreciate ergonomics and this one (to me anyway) makes it seem as if my hands were designed to operate this camera. If it operates as well as it looks like it would, Leica could have a more interesting future than anyone on here would have speculated at this time last week.
Of course all this specualtion is just that. The real story will take a year or three to unfold properly.

Confirmed that the S2 will have AF lenses and priced around $23,000USD.
That means the full frame M9 will sell for around $16,000, throw in the new Noct for another $11,000 and wow, what a steal

well, looks like the wife is going to buy one for her fashion photography. She's had her eye on the hassy sytem but was put off by how it's built compared to her old 503 I hope she lets me play with it from time to time.

Don't know if someone has linked to this yet, but there is much more hands-on detail here, including a side-by-side shot of the S2 and a Nikon D700 (they're about the same size):

HAHA..that's if she lets me touch it...she won't even let me play with her 1dsMKIII...she sees how I handle my m's.
Odds are I could end up being able to see one very very closely and never being able to touch it

Incorrect and impolite.
Politeness is relative. You also have to read previous posts first before accusing me, young Kevin.
The body is being redied to include a WiFi module. That is a recent change that Solms didn't originally plan.
In the context of one presumed target market (wedding photographers) a dual-card slot which takes the same type of card and writes either RAW or JPEG to both cards, my assertions were spot on.
Wedding photogs will be better served by a D3 and its wireless flash system coupled with or without radio poppers.
Advertising photos, on the other hand, will be able produce similar/better results using another system at much lower cost.
So what's your bag?
