I kinda like this. Leica is in the medium format market now, and this camera is more portable that any medium format digital camera on the market.

Maybe this really is another major breakthrough for Leica marketing. Ugly the camera is, but it is smaller than any of of the clumsy looking large cousins that use the large sized sensor. If I had an extra $35,000 to spend, would I spend the money on this camera? Food for thought.

Ohh...., I want one in chrome!

the need for speed
but to show it off with a Summarit lens?
i know, i'm probably being a terrible snob here, but i wish they had put a Cron or a Lux on it...

One dial on the top. Must be totally menu controlled.

Summer 2009... That gives Canon/Nikon nine months to rain on the parade...

This is a bold move. I'm not in the market, but I hope the gamble pays off, because I'd like them to make similar bold moves with the M line!

This is a great move and will sell well, unless ....
1) price point is > 30k AND ...
2) another > FF digital is announced this week with a 5-10k $ price point.
Cheers,
Roland.
PS: really wonder what the dynamic range of this beast is ...

When a FF 21mp 5DMk2 will sell for $2,600, is 31mp really worth $30,000 (or whatever)? Dunno.

It could be that Canon and Leica have teamed up here. In such a case, Canon will not introduce a much better FF digital camera soon.

Just saw the price in one of the releases. 20,000 euro for the body. Start saving those pennies.

Slap a $10,000 normal lens on that baby and you're ready to rock.

could do VERY well at that price imo
speed and size alone might mean many pros jump ship

Then lock-em in to the lenses with a decent product map and this could be a minor earthquake...

I'm all for it. This is seriously what Leica needs to do. Make their dominance in an emerging market. Leica has its pedigree just as hasselblad does, and I'm certain we will see many many photographers using these cameras if they do indeed meet all the criteria, etc.
Bravo.

Too little & it will be much too late - as in way too long between announcement and availability. My bet is that Canon will ship something better within 6 months and be fully compatable with their existing EOS lenses. The S series will sell as well as the R series - barely.
It's too bad as it looks somewhat interesting. They'd have done better teaming with someone else and using an existing mount as well as not announcing it until they were nearly ready to ship.
All IMHO & all that.
