New Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 lens?

I loved the idea of a small 28mm for my m bodies.


So I just bought a chrome Voigtlander 28mm f/3.5 and pocketed the other $2050. 😉

(I will say though, taking away everything else about the lens, it is a beautifully designed thing, and with Leica's modern typeface applied it has this really elegant retro-modern look to it that I'm quite fond of. Still wouldn't buy one at $2400, but I appreciate its beautiful design none-the-less.
 
Sean Reid has put up the first part of his review of this lens on his pay website. He concentrates on photos shot in the field, lots of samples, leaving the studio tests (with comparisons) for the next part. He acknowledges the historic nature of the lens optical defects and notes that it's more expensive than the 2.8/28 ASPH, but it's not meant for the same use. Not too fond of the ginormous lens hood!

No, this lens will never by high resolution except in the middle under any conditions. Looking at the MTFs on the Data Sheet for the new 28mm Summaron, I can see that its corner performance is quite poor, even stopping down to f/11 seems to offer almost no improvement. This truly is a character lens, with the main difference to the old version being less flare due to the improved coatings.

I'm better and more practical since I stick to f8 lenses (insert quote about f8 from famous photographer here). I'll save money and it's all about the picture and dentists can buy these and what were Leica people thinking?

I think Adams & co were prescient when they founded the f64 group - whack an f64 lens on a Sony A7s and all's right with the world.
 
I'm not kidding when I say that this lens makes me appreciate my Lomo 32mm 2.8 Art lens.
The look is so similar it is not even funny.
 
As more reviews with photos come online, I like the character of the lens.
That the price withers my eyeballs into raisins just means the lens will be Not Mine Anytime Soon. I'd love to do a bunch of work with it and Foma 100, Delta 100, and FP4.
Toss on some Portra, Pro 400H, Velvia, and Ektar and I'm happy.
Team the lens with the 3.8/24mm Elmar ASPH and wide angle character gets covered.

I like the old timey look of it's imagery, but it makes me pine for the 2.5 50mm Hektor all the more, if I had to make choice for a recreation I would have chosen the Hektor first.

I would have liked to seen some black and white test examples.
