New lens designs?

30 years ago Mandler wrote about the limitations of the Gaussian designs, and in the meantime we have seen lenses overriding them: the complex designs of the ASPH.-Summliluxes (35 o. 50mm), ASPH. Summicron (35), ZM-Biogons (35/2), M-Hexanon (35+50), Ultron (35/17), Nokton (35/1.2).
I think there is no question about that these lenses providing higher resolution, higher contrast, less flare than their Gaussian predecessors (with or without aspherics, high/low refractive glass). The MTF's of theses lenses are impressive, but the real question is if one need these. The hard clinical look, unpleasent OOF rendition, larger size and weight of the lenses, and cost: these are the con's.

Cheers, F.
