Wasn't sure if this has been mentioned, but there's chdk for the XTi now, which unlocks Spot Metering and incremental iso from 16 to 3200.
It's made my XTi useful again. Image quality at 3200 isn't too bad, comparable to a 40D. Iso 16 seems to be about the same as ISO100, but I guess it can be used as an alternative to neutral density filters.
