New M8 Firmware (2.0) !!!!!!!

What were the settings, shutter speed, aperture, raw or jpeg, post processing, etc.

I am not getting as clean as this..

This was shot as a DNG file at f/2 1/360th using Auto WB with no post processing. It looked terrible on the camera's screen, when viewed on my computer using Capture One 4.1 it looked fine.

I'm now about to look at some other test shots I've just taken.

ok...here's a reasonable test of the iso performance increase possibility.
First shot was taken some time ago when I started the post your ISO 2500 shots in a fireback at leicasniper, the second shot was taken just now with the EXACT same PP done, because I did add some noise reduction to the previous shot...they were both shot with the same lens on the same camera settings. The only thing that has changed is that I'm in a new apartment.

Man.. Thomas.. your old apartment sure was dusty !!! ;)

Dave

HAHA. Speaking of apartments, I gotta get back to unpacking...the wife is gonna shoot me when she gets home and finds out i've been tinkering with my camera all day...but then again she's a photographer too, so maybe she'll understand...better to be safe than to suffer the wrath of the wife.

FW v2 my impressions

FW v2 my impressions

I've done the updated FW. Before I did, I shot some before, and then the after. After about a 1/2 hour playing, I find these improvements;
1-I see a quality improvement in both jpeg and raw(DNG) files.
2-Faster, and I mean really fast format time.
3-Now allows use of SDHC.
4-Faster start up time.
5-I can change settings while buffer is clearing.
6-About a 3-4 second improvement in buffer speed with DNG+JPEG Fine
7-Still evaluating.
Will post full sized unprocessed raw to my site later for viewing/downloading.

Dear Thomas,
I think there is much improvement about ISO's. But why not Leica says anything about it? I am not sure about.

Now, that's something to consider...perhaps the perceived ISO performance increase was a side effect from some other programming changes...if that's so I hope to god they don't louse it up in the next firmware update.

Okay, last test examples of boring pics of my cats and kitchen sink.

This was shot at ISO 2500, 1/250 sec at f/2 but in JPEG Fine and with colour saturation set to b/w.

All in all, I think a decent improvement in the higher ISO ranges. Also, taking into account, the incredible swiftness of the new formatting, the quicker buffer times etc etc I think Leica have really done a good job with this update.

I didn't tend to worry about the ISO noise previously as I just shot film at night but this really helps to make the M8 a more versatile camera.

The only gripe I ever really had with the M8 was the noise of the automatic wind-on, if they can make an update to reduce that I'd be ecstatic;)

Ok, I'm impressed.

If I can get my images to be as low noise as the cat and sink, etc., then this will be even more amazing to me in the dark churches I need it for.

they have a "discreet advance" feature on the M8.2, but it is not available as an upgrade option on the M8.

OK, now I am impressed!

I am starting to think they might have indeed knocked back some noise in this update.

First is D700, ISO 1600, CZ 35/2, F/4 in ACR, standard adjustments, ( 25, .5, 25 ), 25 color noise.

Second is M8, ISO 1250, 28/2, F/4 in ACR, standard adjustments, ( 25, .5, 25) , 25 color noise.

Interesting update!

Isn't that what a gentleman makes towards a lady at a dinner and dance evening?

Not enough to make me buy an M8.2, I'll just keep coughing and "ahem-ing" moments after releasing the shutter:rolleyes:

LOL! thank you for the chuckle!

it is making me seriously rethink my strategy of buying a used M8. my "aheming" is pathetic :p
