How much did you pay for your new M8? Please indicate: date, country purchased, and price...

I'm considering a leap into the deep end and curious what others have paid...

Would you do it again at the price you paid now that you've used it???

Thanks in advance...
ken

the reason I ask is that Ii found a dealer very willing to make a deal but I want to get a sense of how far I can push him on pricing... apparently Chrome/silver M8s are not in as much demand and i've been offered a discount of approximately 8% under MSRP...

anyone else buy at a discount????

Ken,
You know how much I paid and where I purchased from - nothing seems to have changed there so . . . . :D

That said.. I'm still waiting for Leica to finish fixing what should have been "standard" to begin with ;)

hey dave - i've been in touch with a Quebec dealer who's offering it to me for $5000 new, with filters and 24month warranty and the promise of replacement if there is anything wrong with it... only GST since it's from Quebec...

apparently, Harry isn't a registered dealer but sells grey market - are you aware? unsubstantiated rumour but curious... i'd like to avoid the PST as it more than makes up for the price differential between Harry and the dealer in Quebec...

your thoughts on this???

I'm well aware of Harry's status as a dealer.
I still got me the filters and my cam's being fixed (albeit by Leica Solms - which, as I said, is what I would prefer compared to NJ currently) and the warranty.

Pricing for new M8's @ a place like Eight Elm is $5499 (plus PST/GST).

So even if the Quebec dealer is offering it at $5000 new, I'd wonder how he's a registered dealer and offering the cam at $500 below retail seeing as how no one else is able to do this who is "registered" ya know?

If he's legit and you've done your checks then you should have nothing to worry about - other than, maybe, getting one of the cams with the same issue I had ;)

Cheers,
Dave

I purchased mine through Leica USA's reburb program - $3,895 - about a year ago. It had a new USA warranty for one year instead of two. After experiencing a number of issues with the camera, it was replaced with a brand new one with the full warranty.

It was a PITA, but ultimately I think it was a very good decision. If I were to purchase another M8 I would buy it through the same program (through Tony Rose at Popflash, of course).

I purchased through EP Levine here in Boston for 4100 brand new through the leica student assistance program.
I would 100% do it again (and I just did). Even at regular cost I would still do it, It has been the only digital camera that I have enjoyed using.

Yep

Yep

I am going to do it again. I semi-retired last year, but I still have 2 contract shoots to finish. My M8 was just paid for with my last shoot, actually it is paying for over half of my next M8. One more shoot, and I will have another M8, and an MP. God, I love free enterprise. My last assignment will pay for a one month fully paid all inclusive family vacation in Jamaica. Can it get any better?

I have not purchased new units but I bought M8 three times for used units.

First time, I bought M8 and Leica Macro lens together at $4000 in the US.
Second time I bought M8 and Leica Elmarit ASPH 28mm at $4800 in Korea.
The last time I bought M8 at $3400 in the US.

Of course that I got UV/IR filters, soft button as well as extra battery with them. : )

I purchased my late model Silver/Chrome (S/N 3330xxx) in November for $5400.00. However, used and demo prices are considerably lower even for units that are only three months old! Still, the Silver/Chrome M8's over here are quite popular and quite desirable. I suspect that Leica may eventually discontinue silver in order to lower production costs. For instance, I noticed they stopped producing the silver 24-Elmarit, so maybe this is another sign of things to come.
Regards,

If my wife ever reads this thread I am so screwed.

Amazon.com had the lowest prices a year ago for new cameras with 2 year warranty and free shipping. I think it was around $4,700.

I tried several Leica dealers here in New England before I bought from Amazon. The disdain and disinterest I got from the brick and mortar guys left me cold.

thanks all - i received an email from a fellow RFF offering some insight into their M8 purchase experience - this person is based in Calgary, unfortunately, I've experienced some problems with my email, so if you see this, please PM me or email me at monochromejournal AT gmail (DOT) com

thanks!!!

I think I paid $2k. That was with trading in ALL of my SLR stuff at adorama. I bought mine April of '07 when the price was $4,700.

I've just bought one for £2500. Considering I'm also spending £4000 on a D3 and 24-70mm f/2.8 for work I really hope I'm happy with it!

Today I received an email from Amazon.com which included a refurbished M8 for $3,612,

Thanks for making mention of this in the thread Roger. I had been hoping to find a second body before leaving for two months in Canada. It was delivered yesterday afternoon, and while my wife was out, no less!

I'm trying to find what exactly is wrong with it so that it qualifies as a refurbished unit. A corner of the outer box was slightly crunched, but nothing that would have made me refuse it in any case. Camera looks perfectly clean, but I see that the orange sticker on the body cap is missing. Camera EXIF data says 280 shutter actuations. My brand new one last year from Amazon had about 90 actuations when I took possession of it.

It focuses fine with the lenses that focus well on my other body and focuses poorly with the lenses I've had trouble with. I see some spots on the sensor, otherwise with updated firmware it seems indistinguishable from the one I have.

That Amazon policy allows a 30 day return privilege makes them a very attractive vendor, in my opinion. Certainly lessens my anxiety in ordering a product that might have "issues."

My only unresolved issue concerns the fact that it is silver while my other M8 body is black. I haven't yet come up with a coherent response should my wife ask why my old camera, which is how I always refer to the M8 "oh, that old camera" with an emphasis on old, why my old camera spontaneously changes color from black to silver and back again.

$4500 Australian Dollars for a "DEMO" however it has the full 2 year Leica factory warranty. Purchased from Camera Lane Melbourne Australia
