New M8 user with freezing problem

Turn off autoreview, avoid continuous mode, and hold your tongue in the right side of your mouth while facing the east with a pie tin on your head! ;)

Sounds good. I should probably also sacrifice a goat just to be on the safe side. I'll try all those things when I get the camera back on Thursday.

Sorry, I know it's not funny when you own an expensive paper weight. Just was amused at the advice you were getting. :)

Yep, I hate that now days everything needs a firmware update before working. I just had to update the firmware of our washing machine and next thing needing an update is our family's pocket cam Canon S90 which says "Lens error, please restart camera".

These are two easy steps to make sure the camera works smoothly.

"Auto review" and "continuous shooting" dont separate cameras from "paperweights" for me but your mileage may vary.

I'm nonplussed. I've been using two M8 for three years and I have never seen this problem...

Having used a non-branded battery, you have effectively broken the "legal warranty" which applies during the full life of the camera (and generally any manufactured product), and which covers the "hidden faults" that a normal user would not be able to discover in a resonable time. I would suggest that you buy a genuine Leica battery and stick to.

Leica service didn't mind me using a non-branded battery and they did the service under warranty. Service included adjustment, cleaning etc. They didn't find the fault although I have been able to repeat it with two different M8, three different batteries (one original) and two different memory cards. A lot of combination and only thing common are the settings I have been using.

I will continue using non-branded batteries because I haven't found any difference between them and originals, except that you can buy maybe six non-branded batteries with the price of one Leica battery.

Although they didn't find the fault, my camera has been magically working after I got it back. No idea why. I will keep using my favourite settings (auto review on etc.) and see if the problem occurs.

Just had the same problem with a used M8. Strangely I was able to access the menu and set buttons even when the camera was in the off position! The shutter will not fire either. This makes me think it is an electrical problem.
