New m8 user

I recently purchased an m8 and Leica 35mm 1.4 Summicron lens. My learning curve is very good with the rangefinder format, but when I focus the lens to infinity (35 feet or more), my pictures semm to lose focus. I am very good up to about 20 feet. Any suggestions?

The issue you describe is somewhat puzzling.

First: If the maximum aperture is 1.4, then it's a Summilux. Assuming this is the case, this lens is prone to focus shift at different apertures. Have it tested (it can be adjusted).

Second: Check the camera at infinity by focusing on the moon (if this is off you need to send it to Leica for adjustment).

Third: Check for front/back-focusing - Focus on something that will give you depth perception (like a chess board) with objects in front, middle, and back (about an inch or two apart) diagonally. Focus on the center piece. If this is off (you will know if it is), it could be the lens or the camera. If a problem exists here, a technician should be able to narrow it down.

Glad to have you on board! I love my M8. The focus shift problem is all over the Leica User forum website. Try this thread, and even if you aren't a member (easy to do) and cannot see the images, you can read the text:

Obviously a defect. Get it replaced ASAP. I had this issue with an old Sigma telephoto lens.
