New MP vs Vintage

@boojum - I have deleted my comments regarding such matters and will leave this discussion to others.

If the OP decides to roll the dice, then I truly wish them well.

I am not trying to discourage comments, rather the opposite. It is just strange how heated it gets on a forum of rangefinder folks. Or maybe that is the reason why. That Red Dot is like a red flag to a bull it seems.

I really do wonder why it gets so heated. Do you think we are opinionated? Maybe??

As long as they aren't short, curly hairs, I am kind of okay with this.
That's a whole different issue Leica Camera would have to deal with.
Looks like a common problem across other brands as well...

Read an interview with Yeuxin Ye recently. His advice to someone looking to buy first Leica was a new MP or MA. He was of the opinion that at some point the older cameras would be unrepairable for practical purposes because of parts availability.

Buying new because of this problem is true for *any* camera make, never mind wrist watch, car, bicycle, motorcycle ... any machine at all really.

Let me tell you about restoring my 1967 Lancia Fulvia Coupé ... ;)

Dude, M3-2-4 are the ones.

M4-P feels indestructiblle. Probably the one camera I’d take on the sun.

M5 is a must-have, but there’s always something in need of tweaking on any given M5.

The rest of the Leicas…. One should own them but only on top of a M3-2-4.

Many years ago I watched what must have been a tiny bug walk across the focusing screen of my Canon TX. Took off the lens and it was on the other side of the focusing screen, never saw it again, dead or alive...

Flames are inevitable. This is a camera forum dedicated to rangefinder cameras, and Leica is the one of the premier rangefinder camera makers. ;)

Good luck to you!

Have owned Leica M’s since a Leica CL in 1975. I think my first new purchase was a M4-2 about 1980 followed by M4-P, M6 and M6TTL when they arrived on the scene. Have also owned M3, M2, M4 and M5. My favorite is the M2 but I like modern film loading. I purchased a new MP in February, 2024 and can see no difference in the quality of it vs the older models.

With digital, I do not shoot as much film as I did but still shoot enough. I am enjoying the black paint MP. I will say the black paint is much softer than I expected. I already have a well brassed camera.
