I heard that at the end of the month, Sony will be announcing the NEX7 and a NEXpro...

Been waiting for one with a viewfinder since I fiddled with my bro's NEX5. The x100 piqued my curiosity, but the lack of interchangeable lenses is a deal breaker. (a 35mm and 75mm equivalent is what I need :) )

Anyone else hear about these rumors? So I can start to be truly excited :)

Interesting, prosumer model from Sony? Lens options does it for me with NEX, instead of current buzz with Fuji x100.

Sry no links to rumors anywhere, but would be interested to read also :)

Same reason here... as lovely as the x100 is, the lack of interchangeable lenses is a deal breaker. I also did a Google search and there were no links anywhere... here's hoping what I heard is true.

Heard it from a photojournalist who's a huge NEX5 fan and also a photo consultant and instructor from a huge Canadian camera store. Which is why I am inclined to believe him. :) Here's hoping...

Not to be rude, but that's exactly why I'm still happy with and use my old Canon P and L1. I doubet if Canon will be coming out w/ an "improved" model 6 mos. after the previous one. I hate planned obsolescence.

Come on, you are comparing a camera that has had many successors to a camera that hasn't had any yet based on a rumor? The NEX3 and NEX5 or no more obsolete than your P. Obsolescence is all in one's head.

Bill, that's trolling. This isn't planned obsolescence, it's gradual innovation. The awesomeness of your film cameras is not the topic at hand.

I'm fairly sure my NEX3 will continue to work fine after the new ones are out, though I'll most likely upgrade if they release one with a hotshoe.

I'm also quite sure that my new Nex-3 will continue to operate even after the new Nex is released. It will probably be more expensive, and have extra features that I don't really need. And I would have to wait, and wouldn't have the benefit of being able to use it -now-.

From another thread it seems that Nex 3 is being discontinued.See nex100's information

Nex 3 may be discontinued, but it still works prefectly fine is my point. It's only obsolete if you want it to be.

However, per the definition of obsolete, I guess we're both right:

Definition of OBSOLETE

1
a : no longer in use or no longer useful <an obsolete word> b : of a kind or style no longer current : old-fashioned <an obsolete technology>

He's got a valid argument with planned obsolescence - the NEX3 has a production lifespans measured in months, building in extraordinary depreciation. Use it and throw it away.

Not everyone does things that way.

I think digital cameras, at least the GOOD digital cameras are actually holding their value longer and longer as time goes on. During the great megapixel wars, yes, a 4mp camera became obsolete as soon as the 6mp's came out... and they went out the door when the 8mp's came out and so on. But I think anyone with half a brain realizes that past about 12mp the return on gaining a mega pixel or two is getting more and more negligible. Look at the Epson Rd1... it's ANCIENT in "electronics years" but there's still many people still using them and many who would pay a premium to get one.

Yes, there will always be a better camera around the corner, but as a photographic tool the Nex 3 for example will be a good option as long as it still powers on. I just picked one up last week, and after reading all these threads about the next gen Nex on the horizon I realized I now longer get that sense of dread and disapointment I used to get when I heard a new version of my current gear is coming out. The Nex 3 does what I want it to do and I while I'm sure there will be bells and whistles on a new version I'll envy, I won't be chucking my Nex 3 at release date of it's successor.

Same thing happenned with my Canon 50D. I had the 30D before it and, when the 40D came out I said no big deal. when the 50D came out it was a definite step up and did things image wise my 50D couldn't do. Now there's been the 7D and the 60D and neither would change the quality of my photos. Yes, bells and whistles and a few more MP's but nothing that would make me concider my 50D obsolete.

So I skipped one generation between my 30D and 50D and it's been arguably two generations now since that and I haven't felt I'm working with obsolete equipment. Unless technology radically changes I think we've reached somewhat of a plateau in digital camera technology where all they're going to be offering us is more bells and whistles. As usefull photographic tools, i think our cameras are actually increasing in lifespan... not bad :)

I know what you mean. Much as I like to play with newer and better (?) cameras, my Leica Digilux 2 remains my favourite go-to digital camera. Six years old and five Mp, the glorious colours and tones I get are better than anything else I have seen (as long as you don't want poster prints). Much as I am enjoying the Nex with CV lenses, I am not getting the feeling I had when I first looked at my Digilux prints.
