New Olympus 35RC Owner - questions/accessories

Hi all,

My first post here, although I've been reading up about these cameras for a bit. I just acquired an Olympus 35RC (pics below), and I'm very excited to have a nice pocketable camera (my other camera is a Canon 30D, which is great, but not the defintion of pocketable!). It looks to be in good condition, everything working so far, and the light seals look like they were replaced, although the rangefinder is a bit dim, so I may get that cleaned. I'm running a roll of film through it to see how it goes, but in the meantime, I have some questions.

1) Off setting - does this lock the shutter release as well as turn off the meter, or do I just have to not wind the last picture if I want to lock the shutter release in my bag?

2) Lens cap - will a normal 43.5mm clip on lens cap work here, or do I need something different/special? The lens is recessed enough that I'm not terribly worried, but I'd still like one, just in case.

3) Carrying pouch - has anybody found any sort of small neoprene or foam pouch that holds a 35RC nicely? I ask because I'll often be putting in a bag with only one compartment along with other things, and I'd like to have a bit of protection for it.

Lowepro makes a small case that fits this camera nicely. I can't remember the model off the top of my head. You're in for a treat, thats a great camera you have there. Welcome!

I have a screw on lens cap, rubber hood and carrying pouch (marred on bottom but still functional) that you can have for the price of postage - $5. Pm me if you're interested! ...Ray

Actually, I think you'll find that a clip-on lens cap will not fit -- this is because the inner ring with the lens information and the meter window are at the same level as the filter ring. I tried this myself and it didn't work. You'll need a slip-on cap.

As for the question about the Off position, I am not sure, but I think the whole reason for its existence is to lock the shutter, particularly if the shutter has been charged. If you don't wind the shutter on you can drain the battery if you leave the setting on A.

Looks like the Lowepro D-Pods 50 (http://products.lowepro.com/product/D-Pods-50,1933,26.htm) should be just the right size to hold this, and since the shoulder strap is removable, I can use it as a pouch inside my messenger bag.

The fact that the threads are at the same level as the ISO dial etc was what I was worried about with a clip on cap - I take it a 43.5mm threaded lens cap would work though?

Thanks for the info on the Off setting, it does indeed appear to lock the shutter. I've now got a PDF of the manual on my phone, so I'll have it with me just in case. Almost done with the first roll of film, so pics to come when that's processed.

You're going to like that camera. I purchased two when I got into film. I've passed them on to two members here. When I look at the images I got with that lens I'm still impressed. It's a solid camera and the glass is sharp. One note if the fstop/speed settings are 'out of range' when trying to shoot something the shutter will not release. Be sure of this especially in bright light. I lost a few shots because I didn't realize this. It's usually a simple matter of changing shutter speed and fstop

Some of the good pictures from my first roll. Looks like no issues with light seals or other problems. Film was Kodak Gold 200, developed and scanned at Walgreens. The 4x6's look better than the scans. Next roll will be Kodak BW400CN, and I'll take it to a pro lab near work to compare. Very happy with the camera so far!
