New Olympus EP-3 to be "with the processing power of a computer"

If this has been posted before, my apologies (mods can move/edit as necessary).

According to PopSci's article (available here), it will have a dual-core processor.

Two observations:

1) This will make it far more attractive than the Panasonic rival line.

2) Why did they need a dual-core processor to do what the Panasonic can (e.g. "Fast Action Thanks in part to an upgraded image sensor, the E-P3’s autofocus greatly outpaces an entry-level DSLR’s"); Panasonic did it without this. To be fair, their integrated image stabilizer outdoes what Panasonic has to do within a lens (which puts the burden on the lens design and price).

Firstly your title "speed of a computer" is just absolute and utter nonsense - no other word for such a spurious and ill-conceived claim. I'm not sure about other Panasonics but I know the Pansonic GH-2 (which has been out for ages) has a THREE core processor (and anyway, what does this matter given we don't know the speeds of the cores or the firmware details or the levels of LSI etc.) So your first observation seems wrong ... as does your second actually.

I just read that article and it is full of inaccurate hyperbole without basis in fact ("twice as fast at processing and saving shots as other cameras" - LOL, give me a break !!).

If you are after some actual measured data of card write speeds etc (and accuracy of reportage) why not read the DPREVIEW review of the Olypmus EP-3 instead ?

In fact, none of this seems to be your fault - I just read that article and it is full of inaccurate hyperbole without basis in fact ("twice as fast at processing and saving shots as other cameras" - LOL, give me a break !!).

I know...people write then speed-read, and if they find something double-takish that's when they proceed to read 😎


BTW, I did not know that about the GH2, but what I wrote (not the article --btw, for those other speed readers!) was based on my experience with the GF1, whose autofocus is by far better than the (current) Olympus m43, even with Olympus's m43 lenses.

Yes, the title was not yours, though I would still take umbrage with either of the two conclusions you came to (which were your "conclusions" rather than part of the article you linked to - though I still can't get over how bad that article was).

The Olympus EP3 is as fast (if not faster) than the Panasonic GH-2 (which is faster than the Panasonic GH-1 and GF-1).

Panasonic actually don't even HAVE a camera in the same line as the Olympus EP3 anymore. They have taken their GF line downmarket for now (and they are much less expensive). Unless they decide to release an upmarket GF, there won't be a rival Panasonic line.
