New Orleans Bound

Logic?

Logic?

How dare you introduce logic into the proceedings!

Ok, a prof and a dean from WASHU say it ain't safe and a website that promotes New Orleans tourism says it ain't safe either. However, you and Natalia both survived!

If Bill goes with a tour group, then he has to deal with other people standing in his bokeh. Have you ever had this happen to you? You set your camera on a tripod and someone with a disposable camera gets in front of your camera and takes a picture of whatever your camera is aimed at? It happens to me all the time. Then they turn around with a sheepish grin and say something stupid like "oh, I'm sorry." What do you say? "I just brought all this gear out here to take pictures of people's asses. Thank you for your cooperation!"

Are the New Orleans cemeteries safe to explore alone? 😕

There are a lot of cemetarys in N.O. If you go out to the end of the St. Charles St. Car line the turn around is near a couple of big ones. These should be fairly safe. I think for the most part you have to worry about Goths more than anything else. 😛

That was what was nice about visiting Japan. People where always very tolerant and aware of you taking pictures and would try not to walk in front of you. One time I was taking a picture of a Budhist monk begging and looked up to see that a giant truck had stopped, with traffic backed up behind him, so he wouldn't drive into my shot!

I'm kinda big, and my buddy Milcom Miasma is 6'3" and not tiny either. Between the two of us, we're about the Chicago starting offensive line for 1967. Should not really be a problem. Plus, I'm driving down. No airline means I could be packing heat, ya just never know. Wanna see them there graveyards. Goths? They're crunchy and good with ketchup.

Best Regards,

Bill, I haven't read this whole thread so if I'm repeating anything, sorry. I just wanted to urge you to be sure and visit the battlefield where "Old Hickory" won a very important battle for the country. The actual site is much smaller than I had imagined but how the fight unfolded is fascinating. I think you'll find a visit there to be interesting and informative.

Yes! Definitely do that! In fact, one of the paddlewheel boats well take you there, which is how Kathryn & I saw it on our honeymoon. I'll pull out the snaps and get the name of the boat for ya. Might have been the Cajun Queen, but I can't remember for sure.

Bill,

Are you and your friends stiil going to New Orleans?

R.J.

I wish we were, but no, sadly. I know Bourbon Street is open, but we're a little older, we didn't plan to D&F all week, so Bourbon Street doesn't interest us. We wanted to see 'historic' New Orleans and that's gone now as I understand it. Our hotel has been completely destroyed in any case, and our friend's inbound plane was cancelled indefinately. We're going to Gettysburg, PA instead.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

I was going to suggest Orange Beach, Alabama if you were going down to the Gulf. According to this beach cam, it looks like everything is open for business:

Off season rates for the Hilton on the beach are $70.

We went there in September 2003 and had a great time. We couldn’t go back last year due to Hurricane Ivan.

R.J.

I appreciate it, thank you for the link. We're two couples coming from different sides of the country and we had to make a decision fast or bag it for the year. Since hurricane season has been unusually violent and unpredictable this year, we all thought a more prudent choice would be a bit north and inland this time around.

Best Regards,
