New Pixii 26MP

I’ve shot my Canon 50/1.2 on one of my Barnacks. It blocks about half of the RF finder. It’s still usable, just a bit tricky.

Uh oh. . So maybe not…

I have the 40mm and Pixii swears they will send me the camera I paid for. As a special favor to you the first lens will be the CV 40 f/1.2. At a 60.8mm diameter there will be some RF blockage. How much to be determined.

The Voigtlander Nokton 35mm F/1.2 Aspherical III dimensions are ~61mm diameter and ~50.5mm long. To my eye, that puts it past the point of no return according to the diagram that one of the folks on RFF who has the camera already distributed:

It's an approximation, of course, and how much it occludes of the rangefinder patch is hard to say, but I'd say anything greater than a 55mm outside diameter is likely to cut off at least some of the RF patch.

G

I guess the Nokton 1.2 is out of the cards. I remember the Ultron 1.7 vintage line having smooth bokeh, so that could be a good option. A quirky looking lens for a quirky looking camera!

If I didn't already have more lenses than I really need, I'd be very interested in the new Voigtländer Heliar 40mm f/2.8 in black paint:

To my eye, that looks like a gorgeous lens: small, light, classic style. :D

Matt Osborne just gave it a good review. For me it is learn how to draw not buy Conté crayons. I am trying not to use the Pixii as a lens buying spree vector. Just two vintage lenses. That CV looks great, but, . . .

LOL! I have no idea who Matt Osborne is or why I should listen to his review... I test and review the lenses I buy by myself, for myself. ;)

As I said, I already have more than enough lenses for all my M-mount cameras. My current inventory of M-mount lenses is 10mm, 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 43mm, 50mm (x2), 75mm, 90mm, and 135mm. I'm not on any lens buying spree at this point. :)

Oh yeah: I am going to test a Tri-Elmar-M 28-35-50mm f/4 ASPH on the Pixii (if UPS ever releases and delivers it to me...) because a friend has one for sale at a decent price, and it is an interesting lens to me for travel use. If I decide to buy it, I have four Leica R lenses I'm no longer using that will be sold to fund it, so the net change in my over-abundant gear collection will be three fewer lenses, not more, and my bank balance will net an increase, not a decrease...

But if I were looking for a 35-40 mm lens to buy, I think that new Heliar 40mm is lovely and worth looking at. It will fit the Pixii dimensions and weight profile very nicely.

Matt is Mr. Leica on YT and pretty good. Up there with Mattias Burling. Looks to me like you are smelling the cheese on that CV 40. Go on. Get it.

Never heard of him. Maybe I'll look into what he's offering and ... Nope: not buying another 40mm lens at present. I don't need another one. I can think of a few other things I'd much rather spend money on.

Godfrey! Thanks for sharing the moment with us!
My only question is: What! no camera strap included? :)

All the best,
Mike

Nope. But ...

Pixii is delivered with two batteries. I don't know about anyone else, but two batteries in the box is much more valuable to me than a strap ... I have half a dozen straps in the drawer to use with the camera already anyway... :D

Now that the long hassle with the United Parcel Sequestering jerks is over, I can start to learn and study the Pixii properly, start making photographs with it.

First order of business is to test all my lenses and adapter plates on the Pixii body and see what the situation is.

- The viewfinder is delightful, actually, and is better than the M4-2 viewfinder in providing a bit more eye relief for my glasses use. Clear and bright optics, very clear frame lines, a bright and contrasty rangefinder window. The range of Field of View options suits most of my needs well. I can see very well with it in sunlight; for my usual use of wide (24 to 28mm), normal (35mm), and short tele (50mm) lenses, it works nicely with no accessory finder needed.

- I've tested all my lenses with respect to their fit on the body and compatibility with the rangefinder.
  • None of my lenses occludes the lens release latch.
  • HyperWide 10/5.6 - occludes most of the RF window but doesn't use the RF, requires Voigtländer 15mm viewfinder
  • Color Skopar 21/3.5, 28/3.5, 50/2.5 - no occlusion (short hoods); 21mm view fits with Ricoh or Voigtländer 28mm accessory viewfinder
  • Aporia 24/2 - no occlusion; standard viewfinder fine, Voigtländer 35mm viewfinder a little nicer.
  • Summilux 35/1.4 (1972) - lens hood is relieved so while it occludes some of the view, you can see around that to focus
  • Pentax-L 43/1.9 Special - no occlusion
  • Summicron-M 50/2 - with relieved fixed hood, small occlusion lower left corner of RF; with built-in hood, no occlusion
  • Summarit-M 75/2.4 - with fixed hood, small occlusion lower left corner of RF; need viewfinder
  • M-Rokkor 90/4 - small occlusion with rubber lens hood, none with metal hood; need viewfinder
  • Hektor 135/4.5 - no occlusion without hood, small occlusion with lens hood fitted; need viewfinder
- A Really Right Stuff B9E camera plate fits without occluding access to the battery, but shifts the camera 12mm to the left of the optical center line on the tripod. A Peak Design standard camera plate fits perfectly centered but requires removal to change the battery.

- Oh yes, a set of Peak Design anchors fit nicely and allow me to use either my PD Leash or Slide Lite straps. My simple rope straps fit nicely, of course, too. The strap eyelets are displaced slightly forwards from the body centerline so that the camera tends to hang comfortably upright with 10mm to 50mm lenses when worn cross-body with a strap. Longer/heavier lenses will make it tip down somewhat.

More as it comes...

Hey, thanks for the great info. It looks like all is going well.

You're welcome. :)

Oh yes: I'll try out the MATE with the Pixii today. Physically, without the lens hood there is no RF occlusion. With the lens hood, it's like the Summilux 35: the hood cuts a swath across the center of the RF patch, but you can see above and below it to focus.

The lens intrudes into the lower right of the viewfinder optical view by a bit, just like the 75, 90, and 135 do.

Overall: Switching frame lines to match focal length is a little tedious ... not a huge problem, but it would be nicer if the Pixii lens mount had the sensor to trigger the right frame lines per M lens. It would also be nicer if the menu system had ISO and Lens parameters on the same, top page, since those are the two things that I as a user am going to change via the menu on a regular basis. Also, the back selector dial that you use to change menu selections is a little less precise in its operation than I'd like; it's usable as is, but sometimes ignores the change in position for a click or two.
And since I know the Pixii is a wholly electronic shutter, I'd love to turn the simulated shutter sound off completely. It just distracts me... ;)

I just experimented with using a USB-C thumb drive to move all of the exposures I've made thus far with the Pixii. It's a fast thumb drive, but the Pixii is not particularly fast doing this kind of file transfer ... it took some minutes to transfer 81 DNG exposures to the thumb drive where it took LR Classic just over a minute and a half to transfer the files from the thumb drive to a hard disk.

Oh yes again: a couple of photographs ... Just snapping around at breakfast this morning.

The good news is that the pics are unspectacular. The colors seem right.* There is no extra contrast or saturation to add "pop" and I like that a lot. Of course you are not photographing the dragon from a Chinese New Years parade either so there are no bursts of color. All in all I say "good" and hope to see you posting some more, soon. And after all the Sturm und Drang you are now taking Pixii to coffee and showing her off to friends. Hopefully they all brought birth gifts and oohed and aahed.. ;o)

*New monitor arrives this afternoon to sort out colors for once and for all: Benq 270C. Now I will really know what you guys are up to. And I'm watching you. Closely. LOL

Monitors make a difference. I hooked up the Benq 270C and your pics look even better. Deeper color but no false contrast or pop. You know I am jonesing for my Pixii.

Very nice image quality all around. The thing which really struck me is how nice that Pentax lens renders. It's a very cool lens, one I'd love to own in M mount but probably never will.

Personally I never change the frame lines with the two lenses I currently use (21&40). But I have suggested that the ISO and exposure compensation should be programable to the back wheel. If that happens, then it should be less tedious since the menu remembers where you where the last time and you don't have to scroll through it anymore to get to the frame lines.
