There's no real reason why a Rollei 35 or TLR should cost much more than a Cosina/Voigtländer Bessa rangefinder. Didn't the 2,8 GX cost about $1000 new in 1986? That was a fair price.

You guys are assuming that people are buying these to use... these are collector's editions with collector's price tags. Nobody goes out and photographs with these... they leave them in their pretty little cases and gawk at them sometimes.

That's a flat out ridiculous price for a Rollei 35. C'mon... LOL. They go for around $100-ish US on eBay based on their "average sale price" feature. Nice to see, however, another grand ole camera company back in the game for sure...

i just read listened to a ditty on Porsche and their struggle in China's auto market.

it came to a head when China imposed outlandish luxury auto taxes. boring math aside, it added 70% of Porsches price on top. Porsche braced for their ensuing demise in China. press spread the story like wildfire...

well, surprise is an understatement. due to it's new found "unattainable" status Porsche found itself unable to keep up to demand after the luxury tax was in place. the price went up, into the stratosphere, and so did sale. Porsche was to later say it saved their skins in China.

Are we talking the little scale focus Rollei 35s that are common as grass used and generally go for $130 or so on the used market? If so, my God. Are there any people really so knuckle-draggingly idiotic to pay 4300 Euros (far more than a Leica MP is new!) for one of those?

A complex equation that factors in the amount of money the very wealthy can spend charted against stupidity levels among the trustfund crowd. The intersection of stupidity and wealth is the price point. Kind of how supply and demand works in commodity trading, but instead of supply calculated against demand, money and idiocy are the variables.

You are thinking about a user camera... people don't use these they collect them... just like titanium M9s, etc. When you have a lot of cash, you can spend a lot of cash. Like I've said before... for some people buying one of these rollei cameras is like me buying a slice of pizza.

Reissue products don't usually have much long-term collectible value. Not something I'd spend the $$ on if I had it.

Perhaps Chris... but these aren't like the Rolleis that cost $100-200 on ebay... these are nicer models that are bit more modern and a bit more special edition like. I'd imagine it to be like this:

Surely it's collectable if someone wants it to collect. Maybe it does not retain value, but to the target market, money is not very important.

I think jsrockit hits the nail on the head, for the target market, it's like buying a slice of pizza. 10 years ago, the idea of me buying a Leica M6 would have been ridiculous, far too much money for far too little camera. Maybe in another 10 years, I'll feel the same about the Rollei.

Those of who don't have £4000 to throw around on a simple camera won't understand the appeal, but I'm quite sure 99% of people don't understand throwing around £4000 on a slightly more complicated camera in the form of a Leica MP.

I think there are some severe double standards surrounding this product, which basically goes like this:

Leica produces a couple of film cameras, and if you're lucky enough to be able to afford an a la carte version of one, you're congratulated on it's purchase and asked for pictures of it.

A very small company, whilst most of us moan about the lack of dedication to film by established, decides to risk their own real money in resurrecting a legendary camera brand. Then those who decide to support their endeavours are called idiots from the armchairs of others.

I find it amazing how negative people can be about what is a very good thing, the re-emergence of a fantastic camera brand. Yes, these cameras are expensive, but that is capitalism. If you'd like them to be more affordable, maybe we should work on earning more money, and not asking a company who are taking a big risk to price it lower.

We can have companies price products very low, and perhaps face bankruptcy. Maybe they could hand over manufacture to China, but of course people would complain about it "not being German".

We are no more the target market for Rollei, than we are for Porsche.
