New R-D1s and lines in low light images

Got my R-D1s earlier this week and have been playing with it in varying conditions. I've noticed that in low light it can, on occasion, drop a horizontal line in some shots. It's only happened in under exposed images. Is this a function of the sensor being taxed by my choices and / or should I be concerned that there's an issue with the camera?

I have had a phenomena a few times, I guess it is because of the sensor design. If you use the "fill light" option in Lightroom on low light images, you will see many horizontal lines appear.
It is seldom an issue for though.

banding? it happens very often when it is underexposed at iso1600 and you turn up more exposure afterwards in the photoshop.

It appears I deleted all the offending files. If it should occur again I'll post some shots.

The lines ppear in the RAW files with no adjustments having been made. They're quite pronounced and are either white, r, g or b. My camera is set to Adobe RGB -- could that play a role? Seems doubtful.

No, the lines I'm referring to are not banding. This is different. It's like a row of pixels was stuck on a color. When I view @ 100% on my monitor it's really obnoxious. In all fairness, my monitor is a 30" screen and I'm viewing full size. When I reduce the size the lines naturally are diminished.


Going to have to do some testing.

I have used my R-D1 in all kinds of lighting conditions at all ISOs and have never seen this problem. I think you have a problem with that camera.

I've seen banding as well as times when the sensor just doesn't handle bright lights in dimly lit scenes very well. But it sounds different from what you're describing. Some examples would be useful.

Thank you all for the posts. Alas I had an opportunity to try and reproduce the problem. Below is a shot (not to be judged for it's photographic merit) that shows the line of rogue pixels. They appear in the same place (upper 1/3 of shot) each time it occurs.

Thoughts?

In my opinion, that looks like a problem with the sensor... I hope you have a warranty!

Thank you for the reply. No offense but I hope you're wrong and remain cautiously optimistic. I've contacted the retailer and await a reply. I've read many good reviews of this retailer and hope that if there is an issue it will be resolved.

Another possibility is that it is either a firmware glitch (re-install, if you can) or corruption in your memory card. If the line occurs in the same spot each time however, it may point more to a hardware fault. If you are dealing with a certain Japanese retailer, you should be in good hands... Good luck!

I truly hope this isn't a sensor issue. I love this camera and hate the idea of parting with it for repair / replacement.

I've had the same issue on the M8. It's almost exactly the same, only my line is vertical - it's either sensor or circuit board from what I've read - but you can chalk that up to it being on the M8. My solution was to send it back to Leica for warranty service.

If you are using Mac Pro with 10.5 leopard and a ATI 1900 Graphics Card, IMHO this is known as 'screen tearing', please google it, it is not the Camera that is causing this. A newer graphic card may solve this problem, however, it just made the horizontal lines vertical in my case.

That's interesting.

However after Googling "screen tearing Leica M8" I'm only getting one entry that actually applies to this situation - that's this particular RFF entry.

If it truly was "screen tearing" then the unaltered unaffected DNG file would not show it since, the unaltered DNG file is the RAW file.

If anyone wants a copy of the DNG's that I have that all show this phenomenon, let me know.

You hit my computer setup in that I'm a Mac guy. The images are appearing on both a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro does have the card you reference.

The solution to determining if this issue is only with Macs is to send or post the RAW file online so that others who are NOT on Macs can view the file and convert it.

That should solve the issue.

That said, I have the DNG files from my M8 and the same line shows up in camera as well.. so.. maybe the camera has this "screen tearing" phenomenon as well.. :rollseyes:
