New R4, 21/4P, 25/4P Prices

Probably excellent lenses, but f4 is so slow—like dslr lens slow. it's 1/2 click slower than my personal outer limit of f3.5, and one past f2.8 comfort zone. I'd trade size for speed in this situation. Why so slow, Stephen? What gives? Is it strictly for size? For the M8? It seems so unrangefinder-like. I don't shoot anything wider than 28, I could be tempted, but not by f4.

are the newer versions significantly shorter than the old versions?

i just read on cvug that the zm 21 is gonna cut into the viewfinder quite a bit. i'd hate to spend that kind of money for a frustrating experience.
i wonder if the cv 21 would be a better choice?

When you get you 4 in the next couple days plug in the ZI 25 and judge for yourself. The ZI 25 and 21 must be about the same size so you will be able to see. It will definitely protrude into the finder, how much? You will know soon.

the zm 21 is 4mm longer than the 25.
it seems the hood makes for most of the intrusion into the finder.

i think i could live with the f4 opening as i envision this lens as an outdoor lens for the most part tho 2.8 would make for a more flexible use lens.

I would not replacing my CV 21 because for the % of time that I use it, the extra $$ could be used elsewhere.

I would get the LTM lens with finder and adaptor if you need one. That would make it a little more flexible for you, but of course you do not have any LTM bodies.

Hey, you will be able to use the 21mm finder on your GRD if you get the wider angle converter for it.

f/4 is only a stop slower than f/2.8. No big deal IMO. I figure that as long as you carry one fast lens, something like the Nokton-40 or -50, it's reasonable make up the other focal lengths with slower but more compact lenses. I'd rather carry, say, a 21 and a 28 rather than one faster 28.

I was preparing to order a 21/4 P at the announced price of $339 but now CameraQuest lists it as $419. I don't know that I can go for it at that price since it is essentially the same glass as the previous version.

The original screw-mount 21mm f/4 is listed at $329, perhaps that was mistaken for the new bayonet one? Or perhaps there was an error in the new listing that's now been corrected.

That IS somewhat more expensive, particularly considering the original includes an accessory finder as well.

What frame lines does the new M21/4P bring up?

As i'm using M8 it would be nice with frame line for 28.

There is another advantage to the new P'lenses. On the old lTM version you had to remove the hood to attach a filter (39mm) and, particularly with the chrome ringed Leica 39's there was a fair chance of reflective flare from the ring. The new P hood will take a 39mm filter and still screw on to the lens.
I dont use filters very often, but with black/white i carry a yellow/orange/red set along. The round hood on my LTM lens always got lost in my bag so this new hood is an improvement. The square hood does intrude quite a bit, but it does look good. The LTM 21 is back on the Bessa T, the 25 LTM is back on the Bessa L and the 21/4 P has been on my R4M since I got it in March. I did a couple of rolls with the 25/2,8 Biogon and the 28/2,8 Biogon, as well as the 38/2,8 Elmarit and the 28/1.9. These lenses do block the finder in the R4M slightly, but you can use them on them - just "sweep" the area and remember what disappeared in the lower right when you shoot.
