New RD1 - Black Frames

If you don't get satisfaction from Robert White, try calling Epson support again. Just don't tell them you bought it from the UK. I've returned two of them now and they never asked me for proof of purchase. They did ask me where and when I bought it, but seemed more concerned with the serial number and the problems I was having. I couldn't even remember the name of the mail order place I got mine from. Epson support didn't care.

Hopefully you'll get a replacement camera from R. White. But if not, I think there's a good chance that Epson will play ball.

with a little help from a friend we have figured out what the problem is. When we set the camera to 1 sec exposure and remove the lens and look inside we notice that upon firing the second shutter does not open. It seems like it is strictly a mechanical issue. the big question is, who will fix it for me?

This could become a big issue for the RD1. Don Goldburg of DAG is one of the most experienced independant RD1 repair guys around. But he told me he can't even get parts. So far it looks like Epson never actually repairs a camera but instead replaces it with a new one. That policy cannot go on forever as they WILL run out of NOS eventually. In your case I would want a new camera while they still have some left. I worry what will happen down the road.

I would take two pictures of the same exact object, using the same exact settings. one would come out fine and the next would be a black frame.

i understand that. but did you check the exif data to see what the shutterspeed was on both?

also, has your RD1 been flashed to a RD1S?

I think he either means "what a piece of @#$%" or "what a pisser"

The RD-1 just has so many problems. The quality appears low to me. Of course, I only read about the bad things since no one will write about "My camera worked well today" . . .and this IS the first digital RF ever. So, we can and will cut it some slack.

The heart of the matter is the RD1 is the only digital rangefinder available. It isn't perfect, thats for sure, but it sure beats a DSLR.

BTW: I dropped my almost perfect RD1 so its off to DAG to be fixed. I'm sure glad I still have my R3a and a darkroom. And I thought film was dead!

so the word from robert white is they are having their epson representitive speak to epson USA to try to make them fix my camera. I hope this works. I'd hate to have to contest the credit card charge...

Pastafazul, are you aware of your rights? You should be covered by the UK distance selling regulations. You can find this stuff out from the DTI web site (something like http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/buying-selling/distance-selling/index.html ). I believe any distance purchase (telephone, internet, whatever) you have a 7 working day (more than a week) honeymoon period after the date you receive the goods, during which you are entitled to "cancel your contract" with a vendor. There's no way Robert White would do you wrong, based on my experience of them, but I personally found it *very* helpful and reassuring to be aware of my rights within the UK.

Hope this helps.

Robert White has been very accomodateing and has offered me a full refund on my camera or an upgrade to an R-D1s. Apparently they were wrongly informed by Epson UK as to the status of the warranty. an intresting fact is that Epson UK will cover warranties on cameras bought in the USA but EPSON USA will not do the same. It really is too bad because that just made me never want to buy another epson product again. I haven't made a decision about whether to take the refund or get a new camera. I don't feel comfortable buying such an expensive camera and having to return it to the UK everytime it needs to be fixed, which seems to be often with this camera. So I may be out of the R-D1 game.
