RFF in its present form has evolved since 2003. We have added to and customized just about everything.

But there are limits. You can only do so much with the original software and its updates.

RFF will be moving to a new software offering many more features, but it needs to mature over time. Right now, its very much a work in progress.

Please go to RangeFinderForum.net -
log in with your ID and password
play around with the new software

and give us your feedback in this thread.

WE KNOW many things need to be done, but they will get done faster with lots of feedback.

DONT POST anything to the new site that you don't mind losing,
BECAUSE eventually all the posts at .net will be replaced with the posts at .com.

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND PATIENCE TO BUILT A BETTER RFF!

Stephen

Chosing the portal tab, and selecting one of the topics on the first page gives this error

Sorry, there is a problem
There are no posts to show
Error code: 2F173/L

At the top of the error page, under "Rangefinderforum Portal", it is then possible to open the "Forums" tab.

If you are looking for feedback one thing I would immediately ask is that you do not lose the key features of the current search function. For example I use the advanced search by my own RFF name to be able to find threads I have participated in or started. its really important I would suggest to have powerful and user friendly search tools.

I got same error and cannot login with my ID and password

under portal:
out of the 5 threads, No 1,2 and 5 lead to the message:

Error code: 2F173/L
Thread No 3 and 4 open normally

other tabs look working nomally too.

the only other thing I found under "Browse > Forums" was that any quotes, in the individual posts, do not appear as quotes usually do ( highlighted by different color and intent ) but one can se the htlm [quote name=membername]...[/quote]

I cannot login, it said below, even I checked carefully the info:

"The Display Name or Email Address you entered does not belong to any account. Make sure that it is typed correctly."

Logged in fine.

One strong suggestion I might make, and I really did not play around much, is to keep (port, whatever) all or as much of the current content and forum structure as is possible, as there's a treasure trove of information here!

Logged in no problem. When I visit RFF, I always hit the New Posts tab first to check on new activity. It’d be great not to lose easy access to that feature.

Login went fine.

There seems to be an issue with image tags. I went to the "Share your 4x5" photos" thread and not a single photo appeared, all BB code. Running Vivaldi 1.11.917.39 (Stable channel) (32-bit) JavaScript V8 6.0.286.52 on W7 64-bit.

Not so sure about the new layout. Spend some time looking what sub-forum I needed. And going to another sub-forum means you have to go back all the way to the top and then down again. I prefer the layout with all the categories on the left hand side.

any support docu or FAQ... just general questions.... will there be forums and how do I post?

Okay it took a few minutes but I figured out some of the features... Using Win7 with IE - I know, I know, I know... but some things change slowly...

I really like that RFF are hosting photos! Big improvement... having to upload to a hosting site and adding the link to the thread was so yesterday ; )

Looking forward to a stable version.... thanks again!

I will take a look, but from my viewpoint RFF is just about perfect, with nothing to complain about. But I do have a question:

Why is it that there was a time when I could click on one of the random pictures near the top; then I could click the back button and the original set of pictures would still be there; and I could click on a different picture to see that one; hit the back button; all original pictures still there; and so on. And then there came a time when, after I hit the back button, all four original pictures were gone, with no opportunity to look at a second or third one; then the earlier setup was restored and I could see all four again if I wanted; and now it as changed again and I have to settle for only one picture.

What's up with that?

I use an iMac and a Macbook. It happens the same way on both.

I just looked. Nope. I much prefer the way it is now. Please don't mess it up!

I haven't been able to return to photo.net since they screwed it up. I hope that doesn't happen here.

Create button at the top which goes directly to topic/gallery/ads is a nice touch.

Gallery itself seems a big improvement.

Not sure why we need a calendar, but maybe just me.

Layout of the directory of forums is a big improvement.

I would second the suggestion that access to "most recent posts" (entire site) should be front and center, with easy access, prominently displayed. When Photo.net made their transition, the process to access a complete list of most recent posts, went from default and instantaneous to several button pushes, which was a retrograde step.

PLEASE, make it easier and obvious to post feedback for sellers and buyers in the classifieds. This might be the most convoluted aspect of the current site (outside of posting photos, but new layout has addressed that, it seems). Either make it possible to post feedback by just clicking on a member's name anywhere on the site, or, if there are concerns about people just posting illegitimate feedback to members (which is a reasonable concern), set up feedback in the same way it is handled on Fred Miranda, which is both easy and automatically limited to actual nuyers and sellers of a specific item. (Only members who have posted a comment in an ad thread will ever see a button for feedback at the heading of the ad itself, and that won't show up until the item is marked as sold. Just a suggestion.)

Having The Angry Photographer still listed as a mentor, maybe that can go away. Like having for a mentor, I don't know, Satan? Maybe I am just not angry enough.

Messages needs some work in the new site. Layout seems unhelpful. Going to messages, I see all my messages, but laid out in a way I have no idea who they are from. When I search messages, that needs to be obvious, the way it is on the current site. When I am looking for a specific old message, I look for a message FROM a specific member. Should be obvious, and all laid out like current existing format, not hidden behind another button push.

The improvement in maximum file size possible for uploading a profile photo is very welcome. The current miniscule limit is the reason I could never upload my preferred photo, no matter how lossy I made the jpg. Thanks!

It's pretty slow moving between items in the menu bar, but I assume that's because this is a beta.

Personally, all things considered, it seems a big improvement. I'd imagine some will adopt an "over my dead body" attitude, but that's to be expected in a forum with a high percentage of old people like myself, who prefer really old cameras, and old things in general, because face it, things were actually made better 50 years ago. But not web sites.

Thanks for all the obvious work someone has put into this. Really.

Great quote.

And great work. Question: will it work with Tapatalk? If the mobile UX is much better then I’d abandon the app. I think they probably take a cut on the ad revenue.

Looks good. But I sure don't like the way forum groups are presented as paragraphs rather than as lists. For long-time users who know when they are after, it's fine. But for new visitors, that's an unclear way to present content.
